BOXING REVOLUTION III: Villanueva scores 1st round KO; Magbanua suffers shocking defeat By Lito delos Reyes PhilBoxing.com Sun, 28 Jun 2015 Villanueva. DAVAO CITY -- Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental featherweight champion Lorenzo ?Thunderbolt? Villanueva scored a first round knockout but his stablemate Rolando ?The Smooth Operator? Magbanua suffered a shocking knockout loss in the Boxing Revolution III last Friday night at the Almendras gym. The 29-year old Villanueva landed a vicious left straight jab to stop substitute Hagibis Quinones of General Santos City in 34 seconds of the first round. Trainer Billy Quinones immediately climbed up the ring to help his boxer. It was Villanueva?s 29th win with 27 KOs against only one loss and no draw. Villanueva?s only setback was against the hands of Indonesian Daud Yordan in the second round of their title-fight for the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) featherweight title on May 5, 2012 at the Marina Bay Sands in Sinagpore. Quinones, a later substitute, suffered his 11th loss with 5 wins and 1 draw. Magbanua, on the other hand, absorbed a 6th round knockout loss to Rey ?The Stingray? Las Pinas. The 29-year old Las Pinas, a former Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) bantamweight champion, landed a wicked right hook on the face of Magbanua for the knockout in 2:59 of the 6th round. Magbanua tried to stand up immediately but was still wobbling forcing the referee to stop the fight. ?Nag-kumpiyansa kasi ako at nanggigil. Gusto ko kasi siyang ma-knockout agad,? said the 30-year old Magbanua after the fight. Magbanua, a former member of the national amateur boxing team and ex-WBO Oriental bantamweight title-holder, was leading on the three judges? sheets as he landed more telling blows in the first five rounds. But Magbanua got over-confident in the 6th round. ?That is a lesson he must have learned from this fight na huwag talagang mag kumpiyansa,? said former Cotabato Gov. Manny Pinol, who is spearheading SSMNI with international televangelist Pastro Apollo C. Quiboloy as the CEO. Las Pinas, a native of Santa Josefa, Agusan de Sur improved his record to 20 wins, 11 losses and 5 draws. (LITO DELOS REYES) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Lito delos Reyes. |
