GUERRERO SURVIVES KNOCKDOWN, WINS BY SPLIT DECISION; SONSONA WINS

PhilBoxing.com

StubHub Center, Carson CA:- Robert Guerrero of Gilroy, CA (34-3-1,18KO) came to this venue early Saturday afternoon favored over his Los Angeles opponent, Aaron Martinez (19-4-1,4KO). The fight was the main event for the PBCon NBC shown at high noon PST to accommodate the 3PM time at the east coast and be distinct from another fight happening on that side of the country, in New York City where Miguel Cotto fights Daniel Gaele.

Guerrero was supposed to have an easy time against Martinez but Martinez had other plans. He didn?t come to the fight just to lay down and die. In fact he took Guerrero to the far corners and against the ropes where he choose to fight inside and throw short shots from all angles. One of those shots dropped Guerrero in round 4. Lucky for Guerrero, the KD happened just about the end of the round and it gave him time to recover between the rounds.

Martinez scores a knockdown against Guerrero.

After the KD, Guerrero switched to plan B and started fighting from a distance to negate some of the advantages of Martinez, mainly his bigger size. With that Guerrero was able to avoid the short close in shots of Martinez that did the most damage against him.

Towards the championship rounds, Martinez appeared to have gassed out and his punches were not as effective anymore. With that Guerrero manage to stick and run although he did not completely avoid Martinez who managed to land some shots albeit far and in between.

At the end, Guerrero was awarded a split decision which was loudly greeted by boos from the crowd that came to support him.

Other Results:

Ex-US Olympian, Dominic Breazeale of Glendale, CA (15-0-0, 14 KO) had his hand full against a scrappy Cuban fighter from the City of Cienfuegos, Yasmany Consuegra (17-1-0, 14KO). The Cuban consistently handed a looping right overhead shots that appeared to bother Breazeale who was slow in getting warmed up.

In round 2 Breazeale finally connected with a right hand and dropped the Cuban. He however survived the round although the end seemed just a matter of time. Consuegra did not appear the same after the KD.

In round three Breazeale dropped him two more times and the referee stopped the fight to save the Cuban slugger.

Time of the knock out was 1:49 of round three.

Vic Darchinyan of Armenia (40-8-1, 29KO) appears to have reach the end of his career against Jesus Cuellar of Buenos Aires, ARG (27-1-0,20KO), a fighter molded by Robert Garcia of Oxnard, CA.

The fight was see saw although Darchinyan appeared to be on the front seat of the fight.

Just about the end of round 8th, Cuellar suddenly dropped Darchinyan and the fight ended at 1:08 of round 8th.

Alfredo Angulo (23-5-0, 18KO) of Mexicali, MX who came to the weigh-in yesterday 2.6 pounds over the limit dominated Delrey Raines of Oklahoma City( 20-11-1, 14KO).

Raines gave a good account of himself early in the fight scoring decently but it was obvious he did not have what it takes to take on a ?dog? like Angulo. He was dropped in round 4 and then twice in round 5 leading to a TKO at 2:15 of the round.

Filipino Marvin Sonsona (20-1-1, 15KO) of GenSan fought a very Mayweather-like fight choosing to stick and run throwing almost always ahead of his opponent, Jonathan Arellano of Carson, CA (15-6-2, 3KO) and repeatedly scoring with his right jab. Sonsona danced his way to a majority decision with the scores as follows: 95-95, 96-94, 96-94.

Undefeated Oscar Molina of Norwalk, CA (13-0-0,10KO) won over Todd Manuel of Tijuana, MX (10-6-0.1KO by unanimous decision. Scores 79-72, 80-71, 80-71.

Another undefeated slugger, Alejandro Luna (18-0-0,13KO) of Bellflower, CA won by UD over journeyman Cristobal Cruz of Tijuana, MX (40-16-3, 24KO). Scores were 79-73, 80-72,80-72.

Fabian Maidana (7-0-0,6KO), the young brother of Marcos, of Sta Fe, ARG., scored yet another knockout. This time his victim David Nelson (3-4-3,1KO) of Los Angeles. Maidana downs Nelson 2x in round one. Time 1:09.
