MANIATIS BELIEVES CATCHWEIGHT WILL WORK AGAINST GEALE IN TITLE FIGHT VS COTTO

PhilBoxing.com

Well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis believes that if the agreed upon 157 pound catch-weight comes into play in Daniel Geale?s middleweight title fight against Miguel Cotto on Sunday, Manila Time, at the Barclays Center in New York, it would work against Geale.

He said Geale ?doesn?t have massive power to overwhelm Cotto but could surprise people because the Australian is a capable fighter and is definitely Australia?s best fighter today.?

He said that until Gennady Golovkin caught Geale in their IBO/WBA title fight with a big shot, the Aussie was doing well even as Maniatis underscored the fact that Cotto doesn?t have the power of Golovkin.

He said if Geale fights a smart fight he could win on points over Cotto, the reigning WBC middleweight champion who insisted that the catch-weight of 157 was ?our main point to make this fight happen. They agreed to go down to 157 and I hope he (Geale) can be 157 on Friday? at the official weigh-in.

Cotto?s trainer Freddie Roach said promoter Gary Shaw had the contract for a long time now and added, ?I don?t think it's at issue? while Geale said ?I can't wait to walk away with another title. I?m going in there very confident. I know people don?t give me much of a chance but I?m very excited. I have a huge amount of confidence in myself knowing that I?ve done a great training camp and knowing that I put everything I possible could into it.?

In the face of the differences the World Boxing Council issued a clarification on the catch-weight issue.

It said the term Catch weight ?is used for specific agreements reached by the 2 fighters and is an exclusive commercial contract which has nothing to do with the regulations of boxing? and noted there are 2 scenarios in which catch weight fights have been scheduled.

A-. World title fight scheduled to x division in which the fighters agree to have a limit of how much they can weigh . For example a fight scheduled at welterweight which the limit is 147 lbs. and the fighters agree on weighing 144 maximum. For boxing regulation the fight is within the 147 category, so it is an official welterweight fight.

B-. Over or Under the weight non-title fight. There have been numerous cases where a world champion participates in a fight outside of his / her weight category. Most of the times it is an over the weight fight in which fighters agree on a specific weigh limit.
