WBC PRESIDENT MAURICIO SULAIMAN WILL ADD $1,000 TO THE MEASLY PURSES OF SAULOG AND LAUREL

PhilBoxing.com

World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman, after looking into the circumstances surrounding the recent WBC International bantamweight title fight where the newly crowned champion Ernesto Saulog, revealed he was only paid a measly $340 while Alie Laurel reportedly received $500, has added $1,000 for each fighter from the WBC.

In an overseas telephone conversation with the New Standard/boxingmirror.com which has been following up the Asian Fight Scene expose on the incredibly low purses for the title fight in Kunming, China last May 8 arranged by Filipino promoter/ matchmaker Brico Santig, Sulaiman said ?we are sending $1,000 for each fighter? and would also forego the normal sanction fees.

Sulaiman disclosed that he had ?communicated with all parties? and learned that the fight had to be re-scheduled in China otherwise ?the fighters would have lost their chance to fight for the title.?

Appraised by us of the activities of Santig and the failure of the Games and Amusements Board to protect the boxers, Sulaiman committed to ?constant monitoring? of the goings-on in the Philippines.

Santig had claimed both fighters agreed to the small purse in order to make sure the fight would take place.

Asian Fight Scene earlier quoted Chinese promoter Liu Gang who said he shouldered the airfare and accommodation of the boxers as well as some Filipino officials including GAB boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz who was fight supervisor and Jerold Tomeldan who was the referee for the fight in which all three judges had Saulog the winner by identical scorecards of 96-92.

According to Asian Fight Scene, Sulaiman had earlier described Santig?s contract with Laurel ?not acceptable for a championship fight" and ?morally unacceptable? while WBC executive Mauro Betti described the purses as ?ridiculous and offending.?

Sulaiman had told Betti that while he understands economics plays a role it was ?impossible for the WBC to be involved in a fight for a WBC International title where the purse is $500? even as he pointed out that in Mexico fighters earn $500 for four round bouts.
