PETALCORIN RETAINS WBA TITLE WITH DEVASTATING 1ST ROUND KO OF MA YI MING OF CHINA

PhilBoxing.com

Tough and talented Filipino southpaw Randy ?Razor? Petalcorin retained his WBA light flyweight title with a devastating first round knockout of Chinese challenger Ma Yi Ming on Friday in Beijing, China.

An elated Peter Maniatis who co-manages Petalcorin along with Jim Claude Manangquil told the New Standard/boxingmirror.com minutes after the fight that Petalcorin dropped Yi Ming three times in the opening round with the end coming at 1:45 of the round when referee Raul Caiz Jr called a halt to the massacre.

Petalcorin raced off his stool at the opening bell and had Yi Ming on the canvas for the first time at around 40 seconds into round one before dropping the Chinese fighter twice more to end the fight swiftly.

It was the fourth victory of Petalcorin outside the Philippines and his second in China where he won the interim title with a rousing 7th round TKO of Walter Tello of Panama last August 26 in Shanghai.

Maniatis who is also an award-winning Australian promoter said Petalcorin nailed Yi Ming with ?a series of hooks to the head and some vicious body shots? while he was unmarked as the Chinese fighter ?didn?t land a single punch on Randy.?

Maniatis said ?a new Filipino boxing star is born and our problem is we may run out of opponents.?

The Chinese challenger who looked dangerous at the official weigh-in was no match for Petalcorin who moved with confidence in the ring and picked off his opponent with a variety of punches.

Maniatis had predicted it would be ?a coming out party for the talented southpaw? and it was, as he easily demolished whatever hopes Yi Ming had of giving China a second world title.

With the win Petalcorin improved his record to 24-1-1 with 19 knockouts.

Maniatis said Ultratone CEO Sean Buckley who sponsors Petalcorin is certain to give the 23 year from General Santos City a well-deserved bonus.
