CLAVERAS SUFFERS 1ST ROUND KO IN WBC TITLE MISMATCH
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 12 Apr 2015

WBC Asian Boxing Council light flyweight champion Richard Claveras has suffered a 1st round knockout in a title fight against WBC champion Pedro Guevara in a terrible mismatch in the hometown of the Mexican champion in Mazatlan.
The New Standard/boxingmirror.com described the WBC light flyweight title fight as an ?inexplicable matchup? between the talented Guevara and Claveras who was ranked No. 26.
We reported that ?while Claveras had an unbeaten record of 12 knockouts in 12 wins with 2 draws, his record was misleading as the caliber of the opponents he beat was nowhere near the quality of the fighters Guevara fought en route to winning the title? from Japan?s Akira Yaegashi with a 7th round TKO last December 30.
We even called WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman to question the match-up and were told that two much higher ranked Filipinos backed out for one reason or another and that the Asian Boxing Council had recommended Claveras.
Even the Games and Amusements Board sanctioned the blatant mismatch with the head of the Boxing Division Dr. Nasser Cruz accompanying Claveras to Mexico.
It was an explosive win by Guevara who was making his first defense of the title he had won by beating Yaegashi last December.
Both fighters began aggressively with rights to the head before Guevara connected with an overhand right and a left hook to the body sending Claveras down for the full count.
The result would mean that Guevara will have to defend his title against mandatory challenger Jonathan Taconing who, one week ago, destroyed former world champion Ramon Garcia Hirales in ten rounds in Mexico.
