DE LA HOYA SAYS THERE?S NO FEUD WITH ARUM By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 02 May 2007 Oscar De La Hoya says ?there?s no feud? with his former promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank although he said they are not close. De La Hoya made the statement on the popular Jay Leno show where he was given a rousing reception. Reminded about the fact that he gave Arum his Olympic gold medal which he won in Los Angeles in 1992 but that ?once I retire from boxing he?ll give it back.? De La Hoya?s Golden Boy Promotions and Bob Arum?s Top Rank are locked in a legal battle over the promotional rights to Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao who signed a seven-fight deal with De La Hoya in mid-September and received $500,000 and then two months later signed a four-fight deal with Top Rank and took $1 million. Since then there have been bitter verbal exchanges between Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and Arum. The Golden Boy said he may retire after Saturday?s showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. He said he was 34 years old and that he is ?feeling the pain and has to consider it.? De La Hoya said Mayweather ?is tough? and in a play on Mayweather?s ?Pretty Boy? monicker De La Hoya added ?I hope he doesn?t end up as pretty after the fight.? De La Hoya said he didn?t like to engage in trash talking and would instead let his ?fists do the talking up in the ring.? Reacting to the fact that Las Vegas bookmakers have installed Mayweather a 2 to 1 favorite, De La Hoya said ?I have been favorite for so many years all my career that its less pressure for me.? De La Hoya said he trained harder than normal and looked to have Mayweather handle the pressure. De La Hoya said he normally trained for two months but that this time he trained for four months in Puerto Rico in seclusion and was ?ready to go.? At the same time he confessed that he slept on the same bed with his wife but abstained. De La Hoya said Mayweather?s strength were that he was ?fast, very smart and so I have to show him my experience. This is my toughest fight and I feel like I have to win.? He also indicated his power would make a difference. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
