FORMER NABF PRESIDENT JOE DWYER PASSES AWAY

PhilBoxing.com

Dywer.

Former North American Boxing Federation president Joe Dwyer has passed away and the world of boxing is in deep mourning over the loss of a pillar of the sport.

In remembering Dwyer, the World Boxing Council recalled that Dwyer was a keen and very talented amateur boxer who was good enough to spar with Sugar Ray Robinson, the most brilliant boxer the world has ever seen. Joe recalled that he needed leaches to draw the blood from a few bruises from that encounter and others to follow.

He served in the Army for 2 years and in the Navy reserves for 4 years.

He worked at the docks, and then joined the NY Police Department, where he served for 34 years. In his first 15 years he was an undercover agent at the Organized Crimes Department and in the ensuing years he served in the Police Unity organization, also serving as a bodyguard to Jackie Kennedy/Onasssis on occasion, when she visited New York.

There was a horse on the mounted patrol named ?Joe Dwyer? in honor of our friend due to his unbreakable will and energy.

The WBC reported that Joe was also a successful amateur boxer, fighting 59 times winning 56 of them. Later, while he was working on the Police Department, he was also an inspector at the Athletic Commission in New York in 1996. He continued on this path until he began to work with the International Boxing Federation. He worked at the IBF for 3 years until he became a Judge in the WBC .

Joe was elected NABF Vice President, being simultaneously Championships President, until 2005, when he was elected as the organization President.

A physically tough, powerfully built man, Joe Dwyer knew the route which led to success in life: ? Tenacity, dedication and passion are vital to have success in every transition?

Born and raised in Brooklyn, he developed a special, deep and abiding love for boxing from his earliest days and also an ingrained and unshakable motivation to help his family.

Dwyer once said ?Boxing is a sport you must love. I thought about boxing while I was eating, even when I was sleeping. I used to go directly to the Gym as soon I finished my tasks.?

Joe Dwyer was Judge for 4 years, working in more than 30 title bouts, performing a superb job.

Always dapper and stylish even in casual clothes, Joe Dwyer had a marvelous winning smile, a sharp and ready wit, one helluva tough exterior appearance and the biggest heart of gold.

He gave generously and unstintingly with all his heart, soul, experience and skill to the sport which he so loved, which in turn reciprocated by adoring him in return.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman remarked ? Tears are falling thick and fast, but we are so very proud of you Joe.

This isn't the final round. With your famous fighting spirit Joe, it's only the end of the beginning. We will surely meet again Dear Friend!!!?
