NBA -- Hornets whip Wizards, 94-87 By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Sat, 07 Feb 2015 CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Hornets demonstrated their defensive prowess and beat the Washington Wizards 94-87, Thursday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Missing the services of top scorer and playmaker, Kemba Walker (left knee surgey), the Hornets were outplayed in the first half and were still trailing early in the fourth quarter. A Lance Stephenson jumpshot finally tied the count at 76-all, at the 9 minute mark. Hornets' head coach Steve Clifford said " The first half, that's not our game, the ball didn't move. Our defense was lucky they missed shots. In the second half, our defense was really good, we tried harder." The Wizards could only muster 33 points in the second half, 13 in the fourth quarter, thanks to the swarming defense of the Hornets. Stephenson who had three triples in the first half to keep the Hornets afloat, said " We're playing team defense. We're playing as a group. It gives us easy points and helps us in transitions." Al Jefferson who couldn't get going all night finally extricated himself in the last 5 minutes by slamming a putback on a missed shot by Cody Zeller giving them the lead. " I give them credit for taking me out of my game tonight but other guys stepped up" he said. There was a big disparity in rebounds, 50-37 in favor of the Hornets. They also had the edge in blocks, 15-5 with Jason Maxiell having seven, a career high. Hornets' Gerald Henderson led all scorers with 27 points, including an alley-oop dunk over center Marcin Gotat which got the crowd of 17,091 pumped up. Brian Roberts had 12 points while Jefferson finished with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. Veteran Paul Pierce had 19 points for the Wizards while John Wall tallied 15 points and 13 assists. With the win, the Hornets (22-27) strenghtened their playoff bid. They moved up to 7th place in the Eastern Conference while the Wizards (31-20) hold the 3rd spot.
