TRIBUTE TO DONNIE NIETES ON ?THE MAIN EVENT? THIS SATURDAY AT 8:30 P.M. ON PBO-SKY CABLE

PhilBoxing.com

The ?Tribute to Donnie Nietes?, the World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion who is now the longest-reigning Filipino world champion after surpassing the seven year, three month record of world super featherweight/junior lightweight champion Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde last January 1 will be featured on Viva Sports top-rating weekly boxing show on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. over Pinoy Boy Office-Sky Cable with a replay on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The tribute which was organized by ALA Promotions and its partner, the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN was highlighted by a rare appearance on television of renowned boxing patron Antonio ?Tony? Aldeguer who revealed incidents in the career of Nietes that were never known before.

Also speaking at the well-attended dinner were ABS-CBN?s top executives March Ventosa, Dino Laureno and ?The Voice? of the network Peter Musngi who surprised Nietes with a pre-recorded message from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

Top ALA fighters also spoke along with trainers Edmund Villamor and Edito ?Ala? Villamor.

The special on this weekend will include highlights of Nietes winning the WBO minimum weight title against Thailand?s Pornsawan Porpramook (Kratingdaenggym) and his lkight flyweight championship victory over Ramon Garcia Hirales before a huge crowd at the University of La Salle Gymnasium in Bacolod City who gave the hometown hero from Murcia a rousing reception.
Some of the fight footage used on the show was courtesy of ABS-CBN Sports. This included Nietes? spectacular 9th round victory over Mexico?s Moises Fuentes in a rematch after their first fight ended in a close split draw.

A courtesy call by Nietes on the widow of the late Hall-of-Famer ?Flash? Elorde and a visit to his tomb at the Manila Memorial Park are included in the tribute which was hosted by this reporter who covered most of the fights of Elorde as well as many of the fights of Nietes and knew Elorde extremely well and Nietes during his career.

Nietes surpassed Elorde?s longtime record which stood for 47 years.
