GUMBAN WINS PHIL SUPERFLYWEIGHT TITLE (PHOTOS)

CEBU CITY- Melvin ?Top Gun? Gumban caught Weljan Ugbaniel with a left to the liver right before the end of the round and sent his opponent sprawling in the neutral corner. Referee Ben Necessario reached the full count of ten with Ugbaniel still face down on the canvas.

Official time - 2:59 of the first round.

Gumban, who fights out of the ALA Gym, acquired the vacant Philippine super flyweight title and improves to 19W-0L, 10KO?s. Ugbaniel drops to 13W-3L-1D,4KO?s Their fight was the main event of the ALA-Cobra ?Tunay na Lakas? boxing promotion on Sinulog Sunday at the Gaisano Country Mall Parking Area.

Melvin 'Top Gun' Gumban (C) wins the Philippine super flyweight title by knocking out Weljan Ugbaniel in the first round at the Gaisano Country Mall in Cebu City Sunday night.




Referee Nick Banal rushes in after Elmo Traya (C) knocks down Giovani Rota in the first round.

For the main supporting bout, Elmo ?Bisdak? Traya overwhelmed Giovani Rota from the opening bell with heavy hooks. Rota was dropped twice and Referee Nic Banal ended the carnage at 2:40 of round one.

For the other undercard matches - Vicente Casido won by majority decision against a tough Bryan Samson after 6 rounds. The judges scores ? Edward Ligas ? 57-57, Nic Banal ? 58-56 and Arnie Najera ? 58-57.

Melvin Jerusalem stopped Rez Padrogane in two rounds. A right straight to the abdomen decked Padrogane in the second and Jerusalem knocked him down again with a left to the liver. Referee Ben Necessario signaled the end at the 1:36 mark.

Gerald Suico knocked down Junrex Saldivia in the second round with a left hook and cruised to 4 round unanimous decision. All three judges Romar Embodo, Arnel Pasion and Ben Necesario scored it 40-35.

Junder Gregorio beat Jesson Horteza by unanimous decision after 4 rounds, E.Ligas, A.Najera and A.Pasion had it 39-37.

Joepher ?MaiMai? Montano won by TKO in the second round against Junie Villacrucis. Time ? 1:12. Villacrucis was down in the second and his cornerman signaled their capitulation as referee Ben Necessario initiated his count.

In the opening bout of the evening, Michael Estrella beat a feisty Jonnel Burlado by majority decision after 4 rounds. Scores ? Arnel Pasion ? 38-38, Arnie Najera and Edward Ligas had it 39-37.

This free to the public event was made possible by the continuing partnership of ALA Promotions and Cobra Energy Drink. The fights were supervised by the officials of GAB-Cebu and coincided with the day of the grand parade of the famous Sinulog Festival.
