Five Negrense pugs are among the candidates to suit up for the Philippine Boxing Team in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Singappore in December. This was disclosed yesterday by former Olympian and current national women?s team head coach Roel Velasco. Among these Negrense boxers include Bago City-born Rogen Ladon, James Palicte, and Dennis Galvan as well as Binalbagan?s Ian Clark Bautista and Riza Pasuit. ?As of now they are among the candidates in the men and women?s divisions to undergo local elimination for the upcoming SEA Games,? said the Bago City-hailed Velasco. Ladon cameout with a huge performance two years ago when he came as last minute substitute to injured Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga and won the Asian Elite Men?s Championships at the Amman Boxing Arena in Jordan. Palicte, on the other hand, captured one of the Philippines? silver medals in last year?s ?Agong Cup? held in Malaysia. The Bago-hailed fighter is a late replacement of another Negrense Nico Magliquian of Talisay City ? who failed to wear the national color after being sick a week before the scheduled competition. On the other hand, Galvan and Bautista last suited up in last year?s Incheon Asian Games but, bowed out of medal contention after falling in the men's light welterweight round of 32 and men's flyweight round of 16, respectively. Pasuit, on the other hand, is fighting for the women?s 60 kgs. ?So far we are doing well in our general preparation stage for the upcoming SEA Games,? Velasco said. Bago City-hailed 1992 Barcelona Olympics bronze medalist Velasco said, during his last visit in Bacolod last month, that he seen huge number of potential boxing champions sprouting in the country. This after witnessed the recent Philippine Youth Games (Batang Pinoy) National Finals in Bacolod City. Velasco is confident that his hometown and province will soon again bring honor and pride to the country in the future. ?Though they?re young, I have seen in them the heart and eagerness to win,? he said.(WATCHMEN DAILY JOURNAL) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Jerome S.
