MELINDO FIGHTS FOR IBF WORLD LT. FLYWEIGHT TITLE ON MARCH 28

PhilBoxing.com

Melindo

Milan ?El Methodico? Melindo, the technically sound former flyweight challenger who lost in his bid to wrest the WBO title from WBO/WBA champion Juan Francisco Estrada, the tough and talented Mexican who won the titles from former two-division world champion Brian Viloria, will get a crack at the IBF light flyweight title on March 28 in the Philippines.

Following his loss to Estrada, Melindo went down to light flyweight and has had no problems making the weight.
Melindo earned the title shot at reigning champion Javier ?Cobra? Mendoza of Mexico with a twelve round unanimous decision victory in a title eliminator against Saul Juarez last November 15.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said he is negotiating with Zanfer Promotions of Fernando Beltran regarding staging the fight in the Philippines.

The 26 year old Melindo who has a record of 32-1 with 12 knockouts will be up against a hard-hitting Mexican in 23 year old southpaw Mendoza who has an impressive record of 18 knockouts in 22 wins with only 2 defeats and one draw.

Javier Mendoza (L).

Mendoza won the IBF title with a dominating performance against veteran Ramon Garcia Hirales who had previously lost his title to the Philippines longest reigning champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes on October 8, 2011 before a huge hometown crowd at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.

A report on the boxing site Bad Left Hook said Mendoza overpowered the veteran Garcia Hirales in an impressive showing,
All three judges had Mendoza a comfortable winner with two judges scoring it 115-110 and the third judge turning in a scorecard of 116-109 after Mendoza dropped the former world champion in the 5th and 19th rounds and hurt him several times aside from the knockdowns including the last round.

The report noted that Mendoza had more power and more in his legs as he enjoyed a nine year advantage in age.

ALA Promotions trainer Edito ?Ala? Villamor told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that Melindo as well as the other ALA fighters ?enjoyed no holidays during the Christmas season and continued training because there is no substitute for training.?
