Results from Japan: Doronio draws with Sumiyoshi; Gabejan loses by controversial decision By Carlos Costa PhilBoxing.com Sun, 07 Dec 2014 ![]() In an intense blow-by-blow non-title lightweight battle, Filipino Leonardo "Toto" Doronio (L) of Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila fought to a draw by points against local Japanese fighter Kunihito "Accel" Sumiyoshi (4-3-1, 1 KO) on Sunday (Dec 7) in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Today's draw was the Donorio's (14-9-3, 9 KO's) second result in Japan. Last April, the Highland boxer scored a round 4 TKO win over Nato "Burning" Ishii of Yamaguchi. In the co-main event, compatriot Gabejan was not that lucky. The journeyman Edgar "Koki" Gabejan (26-31-6, 8 KO's) of Samar lost a highly controversial 8-round unanimous decision to a local boxer Fukuoka, a verdict Aljoe Jaro, Gabjan's manager, sees as a "robbery:" "Really, Gabejan was robbed. All rounds from round 1 up to round 7 were dominated by Gabejan. Actually, in round 5, Gabejan was severely punishing the Japanese and the fight should have been stopped right there. But shockingly the referee let the fight continue. "Then the Japanese opponent was blooded, running away for survival... and after the fight is over, the Japanese wins by unanimous decision. How can that be? I strongly disagree." Leonardo Doronio was assisted in Japan by Brico Santig of Bengue's Highland Boxing while the veteran Gabejan - supported by Barista Choi Vending Solutions - was taken care of in Japan by Rizal's Aljoe Jaro of Jaro Boxing. This card in Shimonosek, Yamaguchi, was a production of Kanmon Japan Boxing. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Carlos Costa. ![]() |
