Arizona Boxing News & Notes with Don Smith: What?s next for Manny? No Cotto/Mayweather 2, & Much More By Don Smith PhilBoxing.com Thu, 27 Nov 2014  Boxing Fans, I am proud to announce that I didn?t pay the king?s ransom to watch Manny Pacquiao humiliate the game, but out classed American boxer Chris Algieri who managed to go the distance (12 rounds) despite tumbling to the canvas six times. In his defense, one trip was due to a stumble more than a punch. I was fortunate to be invited by Maya Tabadiro who was celebrating a birthday; so, I didn?t ask her age for fear of being asked to pay the fight fee. Mama didn?t raise any pigeon toed fool. Minutes before the fight began on Saturday 11/22 ( Sunday 11/23 in China); Maya and a friend began collecting $5.00 from invited guests who foolishly ventured a guess on what round would Manny knock out the former MMA fighter. Keep in mind, Manny hasn?t had a knockout in five years, but we are talking about Filipino Americans, except for 2-3 in a room, comprised of 20-25 people. Manny is the boxing god in the Philippines. Maya almost wept when she gave everyone?s money back; no knockout even though it was close in round 9. Oh by the way, I brought Maya a nice birthday gift. I knew what you were thinking. A knockout from Manny would have made for a better gift. By the end of round 4, the HBO talking heads (Jim Lampley & his co-harts) began talking about who Manny might fight next. The names bandied about included Floyd Mayweather Jr., of course, and several other whispered nominees including Diego Chaves, Juan Manuel Marquez, Danny Garcia, Jessie Vargas and a dark horse candidate: Ray Beltran if he beats Terrence Crawford in Omaha on HBO this weekend (11/29). Beltran used to be Manny?s number one sparring partner and he should know every move the Filipino legend makes in the ring. A rematch with the former MMA fighter Algieri is out of the question. HBO hyped him as if he was the next Rocky Balboa instead of the next Rocky Bull Winkle. Sorry Chris! The decision is up to Manny and Top Rank. According to printed sources, Bob Arum turned down a mega bucks offer for Pac Man to meet Mayweather in 2015 and if you believe rumors, Manny P wanted to fight 41 year old Juan Manuel Marquez who supposedly said no; I know a half a dozen boxing fans who would stand in line on the side of a mountain for a week to buy tickets to another Marquez/Pacquiao showdown. As it stand now, I think his choice will be Jessie Vargas who remained undefeated by winning his bout on the under card of the Pacquiao/Algieri bout. I would prefer Danny Garcia and Khan match would be my least favorite preference. Vargas makes logical sense because he is relatively light puncher and he would be intimidated by the wily Pacquiao, the peoples champion wherever he fights. In summation, it was a great birthday party and a less than compelling fight and it won?t be considered a candidate for 2014 fight of the year, sorry Manny! Boxing Noise: Undefeated Arizona welterweight Abel Ramos fought in Tennessee on November 20 and left the state with 2nd round TKO victory over winless Anthony Woods from Tennessee. It was Abel?s first fight since he broke his hand in the spring. His next bout is scheduled for a CBS telecast from the city of San Ynez California at the Chumash Resort on January 9. The TKO win upped Ramos?s record 10-0-2 with 6 knockouts. Stay tuned for name of next foe. In Phoenix, Arizona Channel 5 is the CBS affiliate; Hong Kong is a different story. .... According to Oscar De La Hoya (Golden Boy Promotions) Cotto vs. Mayweather 2 is a rematch that will not happen because Mayweather has a contract with Showtime while Cotto is inked to HBO?GGG will put his 160 lb. belt on the line versus Martin Murray in Monte Carlo on February 21 on HBO. According to several boxing critics, Murray was very sloppy in in his last fight; sloppy won?t win against GGG?.Hitz Boxing sent out a media alert to members of the boxing brotherhood (Media) disputing rumors that Donovan George is withdrawing from his Saturday, December 6 matchup with Jean Pascal at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The toe to toe matchup in a PPV presentation for $24.95 on DISH More B- News: Short Jabs: Congratulations to Joel Marquez (Michael Carbajal?s 9th Street Gym) for winning the 80 lb. weight class title belt at the Gene Lewis tournament in Mesa; his dad was very proud.; amateur boxing rocks!... Rumors out of Buckeye Arizona hint that boxing announcer Ralph Velez is writing occasionally for the Buckeye Valley News. I tried to reach Valley News Editor Sharon Torres, but she was unavailable for comment. ?Local boxers Joey ?The Boxer? Ruelas and Francisco C. de Vaca were in California training. Both fighters are expected to appear on December 20 Iron Boy XV111 card at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix. More Amateur Stuff: The Arizona Silver Gloves Championships are on tap for December 6-8 at the Iron Boy Gym (4238 S. 37th Street) in Phoenix. 101 lb. Xavier Gordin is my prohibitive favorite to win his weight class. 14 year old Xavier, trained by his grandfather who also adopted him, won a title at the Gene Lewis boxing tournament recently has been described as a ?beast? by one admiring trainer. Grandfather Gordin is battling cancer and we wish him well. Xavier is fighting unattached! ?Central Boxing Gym will be represented by Jesus Tadeo & Julian Lopez. Call Mike Sanchez at 480-560-8114 if you have any questions. Silver Gloves competition qualifies kids between ages 8-15 as of January 1, 2015. The Iron Boy hosted event will also open to boxers 8-35. Olympic hopeful Eben Vargas (Gene Lewis Boxing) will compete in the event and he is slick, quick and very polite except in the ring. Eben is trained by Tony Vargas In reality, this event is more than a Silver Gloves Tournament. Fans wanting to volunteer some time working amateur events should seek out Richard Soto at the tournament. I plan to attend on Saturday December 6; please leave your sharp objects, guns, etc. at home if you attend that same day. Thank you very much! Iron Boy XVIII: Next Iron Boy show (XV111) has lined up the following local and national all-star boxing prospects for their December 20 at the Celebrity Theater: Andy Ruiz Jr., Oscar Valdez, Trevor McCumby, Erick de Leon, Alexis Zazueta, Edgar Brito, Joey Ruelas, and Francisco C. de Vaca. Ruelas is returning from an injury and Ruiz was supposed to appear on an earlier Iron Boy Card but had to bow out due to personal reasons. I like the potential of the card, but I haven?t seen the names of their opponents, so final judgment is forthcoming. Iron Boy XV111 is co-produced by Top Rank and several of the scheduled boxers work out of their stable, so to speak. Please check the Iron Boy website for tickets, prices and updates. No word on live stream, yet; Iron Boy XV11 required fans to possess email and face book accounts to see the action. The word free was a little deceptive in the promotional hype, but still a good deal for those folks who are into social media gadgetry. Response From the President: USA Boxing Arizona President Jake Magallanez has always been kosher with me. When I write something he questions, Jake lets me know almost as quick as it took Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry to load up a spitball and toss it 90 feet six inches. In a three paragraph statement, Mr. Gallanez talks about the goal of the organization, Stance on unsanctioned shows and Amateur boxing tournament management of time. Here are his unedited thoughts on 3 subjects that matter to members of the Arizona Amateur boxing community: President Magallanez: Arizona USA Boxing is owned by its? membership. There are many different personalities involved in the web that makes the local boxing community what it is. It is not one person alone that gives the organization its? character. Each club, each coach, each boxer represents the makeup of who and what we are. I feel that each member has been given the opportunity to take ownership and not be micro-managed. We are not free of challenges, but we have managed to address all issues in the best interests of the Arizona Amateur boxing community with consideration of dignity and respect for all members. The success of our athletes is the key to our success. We have done well and have supported our athletes financially to advance to National Tournaments and a chance at International and possibly a berth on the USA Boxing Olympic Team, their dream, our goal. No Crusade: There is no crusade against unsanctioned events, it is quite simple that these shows are in the interest of padding individual pocket books and not din the best interest of the athletes, their safety and well-being. It is the responsibility of each member to not allow themselves, the athletes and families to be taken advantage of by shysters. Those that participate dare as guilty as the people hosting these unsanctioned events. These are people lacking scruples. We need to protect our athletes, our children and rules and regulations that protect their rights and safety. Tournament time Management: Tournament management is the responsibility of the sanction holder. The sanction holder is responsible for employing common courtesy and common sense in establishing start times for bouts if the bracketing shows excessive number of bouts. It is quite simple to start earlier so that bouts do no continue too late in the night. It is not fair to doctors, officials and especially athletes to have to compete into the wee hours of the night. It is detrimental to everyone involved and affects Athlete performance and official?s effectiveness. We actually have a limit of 24 bouts per show in our bylaws. It is then left to the discretion of the doctor and chief of officials to decide if they feel it is in the best interests of competition to allow more bouts than that. Tournament sessions need to be started at appropriate times, using multiple boxing rings to assure that times are controlled and in the best interest of all participants. Common Courtesy, common sense! Hitz Boxing: Hitz boxing founder and high profile promoter showcased his acting skills Bobby Hitz in two recent episodes of the NBC television hit drama Chicago PD. Hitz Boxing is also making news by threatening to take legal action against Ruslan Chagaev and his management team for reneging on a promise to give Hitz boxer Fres Oquendo a rematch should Oquendo lose to Chagaev in their WBA heavyweight title match in July. Fres lost the title bout and was never paid his ?promised? purse of one million dollars and was never given a guaranteed return bout within 120 days as reportedly stipulated. Hitz and his fighter feel they were screwed and tattooed and now they want compensation for the alleged double cross. Team Hitz is demanding justice and this drama may wind up in court??
