Fil-Canadian Louie Cudillo steals the show at the Rumble in Red Deer 6! PhilBoxing.com Mon, 17 Nov 2014 ![]() By Ace Freeman, FightFan.com Alberta Amateur Boxing Friday Nov. 14, 2014, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada ?It?s getting to the point where we?re having trouble matching them,? said veteran coach Dennis Ejack last week, trying to secure fights at the ?Rumble in Red Deer 6? amateur boxing showcase for his phenom Filipino-Canadian twins Louie and Lester Cudillo. The two 17-year old Alberta based brothers and natives of Dagohoy, Bohol, identical in appearance, have been making waves in their home province, winning gold in several tournaments over the last few years. ?For this show, we had to put Louie in a little over his head,? Ejack went on to say. ?The young man he?s facing (the very talented Blake McPhee of Fort McMurray, Alberta) is several years his senior and at least a class heavier in weight. He?s also a provincial champion who?s won three titles this year alone. But the amateurs is a place for learning, and we?ll see how he does.? Luckily for Coach Ejack, his star pupil didn?t let him down. Louie Cudillo won ?Fighter of the Night? honours at Friday?s Rumble in Red Deer, defeating McPhee via three round split decision in a brilliant showcase of timing, footwork and counter punching. Cudillo was fleet footed from the opening bell and his angles proved to frustrate McPhee early. The Filipino-Canadian charge used his mobility well and darted in and out at angles to evade the pressing attack from his bigger opponent. McPhee pressured well but when the two exchanged a decided edge in hand-speed saw Cudillo land more frequently in the early going, including some eye-catching counter punches. In third round McPhee?s pressure caught up to Cudillo and he found more success pinning the younger fighter on the ropes where he got his best work in. Louie did well to dart out of danger to minimize the damage and the two flurried to the final bell leaving the crowd in a delighted frenzy. After three highly skilled and action packed rounds were in the books the younger Cudillo had his hand raised after a well earned split decision victory was announced. It was a very impressive feat for the young Red Deer based fighter. In a bout that was dubbed ?Fight of the Night?, Calgary based Petru Bolun (Goldenstars Gym) looked relentless and violent scoring a third round stoppage win over a very game Ben Alvarez (Panther Gym, Edmonton) in a honey of a battle. Both men traded big shots in the first two rounds but Bolun?s relentlessness tipped the bout in his favour as he jumped all over Alvarez in the third. The referee started a count and decided the Edmonton charge had seen enough and stopped the contest. In an intriguing battle of Super Heavyweight Masters, former 1984 Canadian Olympian Rick Duff came out of retirement to take on Calgary?s Dale Belcher in a three round contest. It was a thrilling bout with both men giving it their all and after three shortened rounds were in the books Duff was awarded a split decision win. He subsequently announced his retirement to the elated Red Deer crowd. Lester Cudillo, the younger of the acclaimed Filipino-Canadian twins, was in tough with Morwat Sirkhan of Calgary Boxing Club. Trained by renowned Alberta based coach Kevin McDermott, Sirkhan engaged the younger Cudillo in a fantastic three round brawl. Both fighters gave as good as they got but Cudillo?s faster hands and adept counter punching gave him an edge on the judges cards and he was awarded a three round split decision victory. It was a successful night of amateur boxing action at Westerner Park in Red Deer and was brought to central Alberta Fight Fans by Red Deer and District Boxing Club in collaboration with Parkland Sled & ATV.
