PhilBoxing.com

GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Eleven of the world's top 20 billiards players have thus far signed up to compete in the Philippine Open 10-Ball Championships slated on Dec. 8 to 16 at the SM City Mall here.

Led by World No. 2 Shane van Boening, No. 3 Chang Yu Lung of Taipei and No. 4 Dennis Orcullo of the Philippines, the highest levels of competition is expected to shatter the tranquil shores of this bustling city dubbed the tuna capital of the world.

The list of participants are swelling by the minute as the countdown to the rich and prestigious $150,000 finals reaches fever pitch. Kuwait is sending in Omar Al Shaheen, Khaleed al Mutaire and Muhammad al Alshammari and Mexican Ruben Bautista Escalera has likewise confirmed. The Iranians and Poles have also sent feelers.

Last month's GenSan Tuna Festival Pacman Cup champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, currently world No. 7, will try to make it back-to-back in the singles division offering $50,000 in prizes.

Hohmann, who calls the Philippines his second home owing to having a Filipina girlfriend and Filipino relatives, will also be on hand to celebrate the birthday of sportsman and billiards participant Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, who put up the total prize fund and invited his billiards friends in celebration of his 36th birthday.

World No. 8 Li Hewen has not confirmed but China has signified to send its best players to compete with the Filipinos, also bannered by world No. 9 Carlo Biado, No. 10 Johann Gonzales Chua, No. 17 Lee Van Corteza, No. 19 Jeffrey Ignacio, No. 20 Warren Kiamco and No. 21 Elmer Haya.

World No. 11 Ko Pin Yi and No. 12 Chang Jung Lin of Chinese Taipei are also entered along with the best from that country including the legendary Chao Fong Fang, among others.

Multi-titled and Finland's world champion Mika Immonen, currently ranked 13th, should not be dismissed along with the other veterans of the sport including Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Efren "Bata" Reyes, who are ranked 36th and 37th, respectively.
