CEBU BOXING OFFICIALS, PHILBOXING TO ATTEND WBO CONVENTION PhilBoxing.com Sat, 25 Oct 2014  Cebu, the hotbed of Philippine boxing, will be well-represented when the World Boxing Organization (WBO) holds its 27th Annual Convention October 27 to 31 at the Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. International boxing judges Salven Lagumbay and Edward Ligas, two pioneering officials of the WBO when the sanctioning body started to make its mark in Asia more than ten years ago led by its Chairman Leon Panoncillo, are slated to fly to the fight capital Sunday for this annual conclave that will attract the world's boxing officials as well as promoters, managers, matchmakers and even fighters. Lagumbay, the first Filipino boxing official to be accredited by the US-based Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC), will be taking a PAL flight from Cebu via Manila en route to Los Angeles where he will rendezvous with Mexican-American Mike Lopez, the Cebu-based matchmaker who currently resides in California. Both will then proceed to Las Vegas just in time for the opening night of the convention on Oct. 27. "We've made a commitment to attend the WBO Convention every year. This will be a chance to meet old friends and make new ones, as well as an opportunity to hone our judging skills through the ABC seminar and exams," said Lagumbay, who will be making his third appearance in this annual convention. Also attending the convention is Philboxing.com founder Dong Secuya, who went ahead of the pack to cover the recent Donaire-Walters showdown. Secuya has been attending the WBO Convention on a regular basis. Ligas, who will also be attending his third WBO convention, will fly from Cebu via Korea en route to Las Vegas for the event. Cebu promotional outfit ALA Promotions is also reportedly sending a contingent to the convention led by its youthful president Michael Aldeguer and Vice-President Dennis Canete.  |
