NBA -- Rubio's career-high 28 points topple Lakers

LOS ANGELES -- Ricky Rubio exploded for 28 points and 14 assists to help the Minnesota Timberwolves rally from a 16-point second half deficit to stun the Los Angeles Lakers, 112-111, on Wednesday night at Staples Center.

Rubio, who isn't known much for his scoring, converted 10-of-17 field goals, 2-of-4 triples and 6-of-7 free throws. Kevin Martin had 23 points, prized rookie Karl Anthony-Towns added 14 points and 12 rebounds while Kevin Garnett had a modest four points and seven rebounds to open his 21st NBA season.

Kobe Bryant, who broke the record for playing the most seasons (20) with one team, scored 24 markers as the Lakers led for three quarters before Minnesota, which converted 38 of 83 field goals, ignited a 13-4 to start the fourth quarter and take the lead.

Julius Randle returned to the Lakers line-up and scored 15 points and 11 rebounds. The 7th pick of last year's draft, Randle broke his leg in his first game and missed the rest of the season.

Former Toronto Raptor Lou Williams, last year's sixth man of the year awardee who was acquired via free agency, scored 23 points off the bench, but he missed a potential game-winning basket in the final 0.7 seconds of play

Both teams return to action on Friday, October 30 with the Lakers traveling to Sacramento to face the Kings at the Sleep Train Arena while the Wolves visit the Nuggets at the Pepsi Center.
