LOCAL WBC RING OFFICIALS COMPLAIN ABOUT BEING EXCLUDED FROM WBC FIGHTS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 07 Oct 2014 Local ring officials who are registered and accredited by the World Boxing Council are complaining that they are being excluded from WBC fights in the country and that officials who are not members of the WBC are being assigned. The officials requested our assistance to help regarding the failure of the Games and Amusements Board to assign them to WBC fights in the Philippines such as last Saturday?s clash for the vacant WBC Youth Super Flyweight championship between Rene Dacquel and Menard Abila in Taal, Batangas. The Standard learned that when the head of the boxing division Dr. Nasser Cruz who was in Taal was asked about the irregularity he reportedly claimed that it was GAB chairman Ramon Guazon who gives the assignments. The bypassed WBC ring officials emphasized that they spend their hard-eared money to attend WBC Conventions and pay for their air fares, hotel accommodation and association membership fees in the hope that they will be able to earn when assigned to WBC fights in the Philippines. They pointed out that unfortunately this is not happening. One member of the WBC ring officials group told us ?it is a disgrace that a man who was awarded the ?Best Referee of the Year? citation, Bruce McTavish was not assigned to the WBC Youth Championship fight or any WBC sanctioned fight for that matter.? Instead, the officials complained that the GAB assigned a referee and two judges who are not members of the WBC to the title fight in Taal. The referee who handled the Dacquel-Abila fight was Samson Libres while the non-WBC judges were Greg Ortega, head of the Association of Philippine Boxing Referees and Officials (APBRO) and Sammy Bernabe. One of the WBC officials said that if this practice of assigning non-WBC accredited officials remains unchecked it would destroy the morale of ring officials and contribute to disagreements among ring officials which will not be good for the sport.
