BARRIGA WINS, GALVAN LOSES

The Philippines winning streak in the Incheon Asian Games boxing competition was broken in the last fight on Thursday night when light welterweight Dennis Galvan lost a unanimous three round decision to Mongolia?s Baatarsukh Chinzorig when action continued at the Soonhak Gymnasium.

Chinzorig who did well in several national and international tournaments in 2013 had beaten Galvan in the President?s Cup in Kazakhstan last July and repeated the feat despite Galvan?s vow to avenge his defeat to the Mongolian.

Galvan who won a gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia had lost to Gaybatullah Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan in the AIR Elite Men?s Championships and was expected to keep the country?s winning streak going.

Two judges surprisingly scored a 30-27 shutout against Galvan who appeared to have edged the Mongolian in the first two rounds while the third also scored it for Chinzorig by a much closer 29-28.

While the Mongolian connected with the more telling blows in the third against a tiring Galvan who was guilty of throwing wild punches which failed to find the mark, the Filipino southpaw certainly didn?t deserve to lose by a shutout.

It was the lone setback for the Philippines after five straight wins.

Earlier in the second session Mark Anthony Barriga, the promising light flyweight who lost in the second round at the London Olympic Games in 2012 was fairly lucky to escape with a split decision win over Syria?s Hussin Al Masri.

A second round knockdown scored by Barriga helped bail him out after a lackluster performance against the taller Syrian boxer who back-pedaled much of the time forcing Barriga to chase him around the ring without much success since Barriga?s timing appeared to be off.

One judge scored it for the Filipino by a 30-27 shutout while another had Barriga ahead 29-28 but a third judge scored the fight for Al Masri by the same 29-28 margin resulting in the split decision victory for 2013 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist.

Two of the Philippines top prospects, lightweight Charly Saurez and bantamweight Mario Fernandez see action against tough opponents on Friday.

Fernandez battles Nepal?s PuranRai while Suarez clashes with hard-hitting Indian Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Olympic quarter finalist Akhil Kumar of India.
