CURSON TO PUT NIETES THROUGH TOUGH GRIND By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 23 Sep 2014 Well known American strength and conditioning coach Nick Curson who arrived in Cebu from Los Angeles on Monday has committed to put WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes through a tough training period to get him into great shape for his voluntary title defense at the Waterfront Resort Hotel and Casino on November 15. Nietes who is chasing the record of the late, great Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde who reigned as world junior lightweight champion for seven years and three months is a couple of months short of that target but expects to surpass the record after he overcomes the challenge of either of two Mexicans lined up as possible opponents ? Carlos Velarde or Saul Juarez. Curson who said he was getting over the jetlag was at the ALA Gym on Monday ?supervising some stretching and stuff? but said he would begin serious work with Nietes and IBF Intercontinental super bantamweight champion Prince Albert Pagara who also fights on the Nietes card against tough mandatory challenger Raul Hirales of Mexico, ?within the next few days.? Curson said he would put the two ALA fighters ?through a tough grind and because you don?t take any opponent lightly.? He praised Nietes as ?a champion and a hard worker and one of the most disciplined athletes I?ve ever worked with.? It was Curson who got Nietes into probably the best shape of his life when he annihilated mandatory challenger Moises Fuentes, knocking him down three times in the 9th round of a rematch before Fuentes was counted out at 2:56 of the round by American referee Robert Byrd at the Mall of Asia Arena last May 10. Nietes retained his title with a majority draw against Fuentes in a tough fight last March 2, 2013 with two American judges, Adalaide Byrd and Pat Russell scoring the fight even at 114-114 but with Filipino judge Danrex Tapdasan having Nietes the winner 115-113.
