DOUTHIT WILL PLAY IN THE ASIAN GAMES By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 18 Sep 2014 Contrary to reports that naturalized player Marcus Douthit will not be allowed to play in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea because of supposed objections from the host nation, China, Iran and Japan, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny Pangilinan told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports the report was ?absolutely not true.? The businessman-sportsman and prime patron of basketball and other sports said ?we have authorization from OCA (the Olympic Council of Asia)? which had disallowed the participation of NBA player Andray Blatche because of his failure to meet OCA rules on a three-year residency, for Douthit to play. An obviously upset Pangilinan who was recently invited to be a member of the FIBA board of directors as well as automatically elevated to a place in the FIBA Asia Board, posed the question ?where did that lie come from?? The SBP president said Douthit ?was cleared by OCA in their letter sent to us last September 8? even as he emphasized that he was also cleared by the IAGOC (the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee) during the meeting of the delegation representatives last September 11.? He added, ?we have fully complied with all procedures and requirements making Marcus eligible and part of a 12 man roster.? Pangilinan said ?we will go to battle with: Douthit, Jared Dillinger, Jimmy Alapag, LA Tenorio, Paul Lee, Jeff Chan, Gary David, Gabe Norwood, Ranidel de Ocampo, Japeth Aguilar, Junmar Fajardo and Marc Pingris.? The Standard/Viva Sports spoke to Moying Martelino in Incheon after the story broke and he told us ?I was there and handled the issue. We received a written authority from OCA to allow Douthit and Alapag to play. We made sure that everything was okay.? He said team manager Aboy Castro will attend the manager?s meeting on Fridsay along with Eleanor Navarro who is with the SBP and FIBA Asia and ?knows everything and can answer any questions.? Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said the team will have two practices tomorrow (Friday), one at 8:00 a.m. and the other at 6:00 p.m. before leaving for Incheon on Saturday.
