MVP ELECTED TO FIBA BOARD, TWO OTHER FILIPINOS TO MEDICAL AND LEGAL COMMISSIONS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 14 Sep 2014 Pangilinan. In obvious recognition of his role in redeeming the Philippines standing in international basketball, the governing body for the sport, FIBA, has elected the president of the Samahang Bssketbol ng Pilipinas, businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan to the FIBA Central Board. Pangilinan was also automatically elected to the Board of FIBA Asia on top of his appointment in the FIBA Central Board. In addition, Dr. Jose Raul Canlas, director of the Sports Medicine Center was elected to the Medical Commission and Atty. Aga Francisco to the Legal Commission in what Pangilinan described as ?an excellent meeting with a full agenda that took more than three hours.? Pangilinan said credit for the success of the meeting goes to FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann and newly elected president Horacio Muratore of Argentina who will serve until 2019 when the next FIBA World Cup takes place. Muratore who succeeds Yvan Mainini of France was elected by acclamation. Pangilinan said the FIBA Board is now a ?United Nations of Basketball.? FIBA reported that delegates from 116 national federations who attended the FIBA World Congress last Thursday elected 13 of the potential 29 members that will make up the Central Board for the period 2014-2019. Pangilinan who was invited to sit on the board as a member with voting rights. Pangilinan who was in the forefront of staging the highly successful FIBA Asia Championships at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City in which the Gilas Pilipinas national team won a silver medal and the right to compete in the World Cup has already indicated he plans to bid to hold the FIBA 2019 World Cup in Manila.
