DONAIRE SPARS 8 ROUNDS, LOOKS GOOD By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 10 Sep 2014 World Boxing Association featherweight super champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire sparred eight rounds on Tuesday and looked good according to his father/trainer Nonito ?Dodong? Donaire Sr. Donaire Sr told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that Nonito sparred with featherweight Guy Robb who has a record of 14-1 with 6 knockouts and is trained by Ray Woods, father of the late world champion Diego Corrales and a Mexican junior lightweight at his Donaire Boxing and Fitness Gym in Oakland, California. The father/trainer said it was the first time Nonito sparred eight rounds and it was his fifth sparring session and since he also did his strength and conditioning routine in the morning he decided to rest Wednesday since his body was a little sore. Donaire Sr said the five division world champion ?has got his speed and power back and looked good in his third week of training? for what is expected to be a battle against Jamaica?s undefeated world featherweight champion Nicholas Walters who has a record of 24-0 with 20 knockouts. The fight will take place on a Top Rank card at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on October 18. In his last fight Walters scored a 5th round knockout of veteran Australian Vic Darchinyan in Macau on May 31, 2014 on the same card where Donaire won the WBA featherweight super champion title from South Africa?s Simpiwe Vetyeka by a 5th round technical decision. Walters won the vacant WBA featherweight title with a 7th round TKO of Daulis Prescott on December 8, 2012. Donaire Sr said ?we need to watch for his (Walters) power and make sure that Nonito doesn?t get hit with his power shots? although Nonito himself told us sometime ago ?I too can hit hard? as his record shows 21 knockouts in 33 wins with 2 defeats. The 31 year old Donaire currently weighs around 138 pounds but with six weeks to go his father/trainer is confident that making the 126 pound weight limit won?t be a problem.
