DONAIRE?S DAD BELIEVES THE NONITO-WALTERS CLASH WILL BE A GREAT FIGHT

PhilBoxing.com

The father/trainer of WBA featherweight super champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, ?Dodong? Donaire, believes the title fight between Nonito and WBA champion Nicholas "Axe Man" Walters of Jamaica ?will be a great fight.?

The Donaire-Walters showdown will kickoff the HBO Sports pay-per-view telecast of the WBA/IBO middleweight battle between Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO?s) and WBC Interim champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-61, 51 KO?s) scheduled at the StubHib Center in Carson, California on October 18.

Donaire who won the title via a 4th round unanimous technical decision over Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa at the Cotai Arena in Macau last May 31 has a record of 32-2 with 21 knockouts while Walters who demolished former world champion Vic Darchinyan on the same card in undefeated with a record of 24-0 with 20 knockouts.

Nonito Donaire Sr told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that his son ?just started light training last week? at his gym in San Francisco and is ?okay.?

The father/trainer said it should be ?a great fight because both of them have power? even as he added that Nonito also has ?skill? and that could make the difference.

Walters (L) knocks down Darchinyan.

Donaire knocks down Vetyeka.

Although the fight contracts haven?t been signed as yet, ESPN?s Dan Rafael said the Donaire-Walters fight ?adds a top-notch fight to a card that is already a hot ticket.?

Rafel quoted Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti who said ?these guys want to fight and this was a good spot for them. It?s a terrific fight. It?s Walters relative youth versus Donaire?s experience. Walters is a strong, younger, hungry fighter. Donaire is an established pounbd-for-pound fighter, one of the biggest names in the sport still. It?s not like Donaire hasn?t faced guys like this before. We know Donaire has been there before. Now we?ll see what Walters can do on this kind of big stage.?
