GILAS UNDER 18 TEAM SUCCUMBS TO OUTSIDE SHOOTING OF SOUTH KOREA

PhilBoxing.com

The Gilas Pilipinas Under 18 national basketball team succumbed to the excellent outside shooting of arch rivals South Korea and lost by a 17 point margin, 87-69 as the FIBA World U18 Championships continued at the Al-Gharafa Stadium in Doha, Qatar, Thursday.

The Philippines has already qualified for the next round along with Korea and Jordan whom the Filipinos routed by 25 points, 85-60 in their opening game.

The draw for the next round would be known late Thursday.
Former PBA two-time Most Valuable Player and the only Rookie-MVP in the history of the pro league told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that the young Filipinos showed heart and fought back from a second quarter deficit of 17 points to come to within 45-41 in the third quarter but the Koreans outside shots stalled the rally.

South Korea re-established a double-digit lead before the Philippines hot-shooting guard Ranvill Angelo Tongco buried a triple and Richard Escoto scored four straight points to bring the Filipinos to within seven points, 61-54 at the end of the third quarter.

Just like the Batang Gilas Under 17 team which held their opponents to single digit margins at the end of the first half and into the third quarter, the Under 18 squad also faded in the final ten minutes of the game where the Koreans outscored the Filipinos 26-15 to seal the victory.

The South Koreans led at the end of the 1st quarter 23-17 but the Philippines matched their 22 point output in the 2nd to be down 45-39 at the half.

Korea edged the Philippines by one point in the third 16-15 before their big 26-15 run in the 4th.

Paras whose 6?6?on Kobe Paras had 6 points and 9 rebounds on opening day couldn?t get going which his dad attributed to the fact that ?he hasn?t practiced for a long time? with the team since several of them were playing in the Under 17 team in Dubai.
Paras said he told Kobe that as ?the big man in the team he must rebound? but said that overall the Under 18 team played ?okay.?
5?10? point guard Ranbill Angelo Tongco followed up his 24 points in the game against Jordan behind a 11-of 17 shooting clip once again led the Philippines Under 18 team with a superb 24 point output which included five three-point baskets while 6?2? power forward Mark Dyke contributed a solid double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.
