ARUM WORKING ON ALGIERI FIGHT FOR PACQUIAO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 09 Jul 2014 Algieri. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is working on a Chris Algieri fight for Manny Pacquiao on November 22 at the Cotai Arena in Macau. In an overseas telephone conversation with the Manila Standard, Arum however said ?nothing is firm yet.? Arum said ?Algieri is the one we talked to yesterday and we have an in-depth conversation tomorrow? to hopefully get the fight done following negotiations with Algieri?s promoter Joe DeGuardia. He said he had spoken to Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz about an Algieri fight but that he hadn?t spoken to him ?after we got close to the Algieri people? but would do so soon since Koncz was reportedly ?on a ranch? somewhere. Algieri won lots of admirers for his courageous stand to win the WBO junior welterweight title from former Pacquiao sparring partner Ruslan Provodnikov, the Russian beast at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York last June 14. Algieri won a somewhat controversial split twelve round decision even though he had to fight with his right eye almost completely shut for most of the bout after surviving two knockdowns in the opening round. DeGuardia said while Algieri did great in the Provodnikov fight, ?fighting Pacquiao puts him on a completely different level and a win against Pacquiao makes him a star, a legitimate and true star.? Mitch Abramson of the New York Daily News reported that he had spoken to DeGuardia on the phone Tuesday afternoon and was told ?we have a Pacquiao offer on the table and we are negotiating that actually as we speak.? Algieri?s promoter added ?I expect that we?re going to have a resolution within the next day or two.? He also disclosed that Algieri would move up in weight and challenge Pacquiao for his WBO welterweight title with the title fight to be shown on HBO pay-per-view. Abramson said Arum revealed that Artie Pelullo who has options on Algieri would visit Arum who is undergoing therapy after surgery on his right knee at his home in Los Angeles, in order to finalize the deal. Arum was hopeful he could get DeGuardia on the phone and be able ?to button this up? even as he emphasized ?we are talking serious now with the idea of making the fight. Now, whether it gets made or not I don?t know.? While there were other fighters being considered after Juan Manuel Marquez demanded a ridiculous amount of $20 million to face Pacquiao for a fifth time including WBO No. 4 ranked Carlos Abregu of Argentina and WBC/WBA light welterweight champion Danny Garcia but it appears that Arum is pursuing a fight with the undefeated Algieri who has a record of 20-0 with 8 knockouts.
