ARUM WARNS DONAIRE, HE?S GOT A VERY HARD FIGHT AGAINST VETYEKA By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 22 May 2014 As four division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire prepares to wind up his training by sparring twelve rounds at high noon on Friday before leaving for Macau the following day. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has warned Donaire about the toughness of WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka whom he faces on May 31 in Macau. Arum told the Manila Standard that Donaire ?doesn?t have an easy fight against Vetyeka. He has a very hard fight.? Donaire realizes that and has trained harder than ever although his training stint was a little short and he has had to work double time to get into fighting shape. After another grueling workout at his home on Wednesday evening which consisted of the full range of plyometric exercises including doing the punch-mitts while on the high altitude simulator, speed drills, jogging and bursts of running to enhance his explosiveness, Donaire told the Manila Standard ?we did something very strenuous with the lungs and we have one more day of sparring before we leave for Macau and we should be ready.? Donaire conceded that he had promised "to reach my potential but for this time I don?t think I?ll be able to show my full potential yet but we are getting closer and closer, step by step to it but we are not there yet.? Donaire stressed that ?the way I?ve been training now its more than all the fights I?ve ever done in the past. Its about 150 percent compared to my previous fights but still that?s not my potential. We are not there yet but we?ll get there every fight.? After watching fight tapes of Vetyeka against Indonesia?s Daud Yordan and Chris John from whom Simpiwe Vetyaka won the WBA 126 pound title. Donaire revealed that he and his father/trainer ?Dodong? Donaire Sr hadn?t done that since the first fight against Vic Darchinyan over whom he scored a spectacular 5th round knocked on July 7, 2007 and ?executed everything properly.? He said they now have a game-plan for the Vetyeka title fight and ?we are ready to execute it and ready to go? assuring fight fans ?its going to be a good fight.? Prior to his departure from the OR Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg, South Africa, Veyteka expressed confidence that he would ?beat Donaire convincingly as I have humiliated fighters better than him in the past. Victory is the one thing on my mind because I am the chosen one.? Vetyeka said Donaire?s ?only strength is his ability to catch his opponents with a surprise punch but I hope he is well prepared to face me because I am. Even if the fight was tomorrow I?m more than ready.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
