THREE PINOY BOXERS BITE THE DUST IN MEXICO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 27 Apr 2014 Three Pinoy boxers bit the dust against tough Mexican opponents in Mexico with Richie Mepranum of Sarangani province failing to come out for the 10th round in a WBO/WBA flyweight title fight against tough Juan Francisco Estrada in Sonora. Fighting on the same card, John Mark Apolinario dropped a ten round decision to former world champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez while over in Mexico City Ranel Suco whose ring record indicated a possible mismatch put on a courageous effort before being stopped in the 10th round by WBC bantamweight Silver champion Julio Ceja in what boxing writer Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN described as ?a tough fight.? Mepranum was making a second bid for a world title after losing by a 5th round TKO to Julio Cesar ?Pingo? Miranda in June 2010. Miranda subsequently lost his title to Filipino Brian Viloria in Hawaii. With the win, Estrada who won the WBO/WBA titles from Viloria on April 6, 2013 at the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino in Macau then successfully defended the title against previously undefeated Filipino Milan Melindo also in Macau on July 27, 2013, brought his record against Filipino challengers to 3-0. Apolinario, a talented boxer but not a puncher, also from Sarangani province, lost a ten round decision in a flyweight non-title bout against Marquez who had previously lost his WBA title to Viloria. All three judges had the hard-hitting Marquez the winner by comfortable margins of a 100-90 shutout and scores of 98-92 and 97-93. With the win Marquez improved to 38-4 with 36 knockouts while Apolinario fell to 18-5 with 4 knockouts. Ceja dropped Suco with a hard right in the third round while connecting with solid combinations to the head and body. Ceja, a devastating puncher then went after a tiring Suco and forced referee Gelasius Perez to call a halt at 2:48 of the 10th round. With the victory the Mexican moved to 27-2 with 25 knockouts while Suco dropped to 15-8-2 with 6 knockouts. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
