VAZQUEZ JR WON?T TAKE SONSONA LIGHTLY IN REMATCH By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 23 Apr 2014 Former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr who faces former WBO super flyweight champion ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona in a rematch at Madison Square Garden on June 7, says he won?t take the lanky Filipino southpaw lightly. Vazquez stopped Sonsona in the 4th round of a 122 pound title fight in Puerto Rico in 2010 after the Filipino, who started well but got careless when pinned against the ropes and was knocked out. BoxingScene reports that Vazquez insists he won?t take Sonsona lightly in the rematch which will be on the undercard of the WBC middleweight title fight between Sergio ?Maravilla? Martinez and Miguel Cotto. Vazquez told boxingscene.com "I won't overlook him. The first fight wasn't easy. I knocked him out but he is a good boxer. I was very dedicated, very motivated in that fight. I am working hard and I want to win again and do it for my new promoter and my fans. I have been training hard already for this fight. I am almost on weight. In my career I have had ups and downs and now it is time to be up again." Vazquez Jr. who is signed up with Cotto?s promotional outfit said he believes Cotto, who is now being trained by Freddie Roach, can lead him back to a world title. Sonsona who has begun light training under Jun Agrabio at the gym of his manager Dr. Rajan Yraola in Quezon City, is coming off a spectacular 3rd round knockout victory over former Japanese world super bantamweight champion Akifumi ?Sugar? Shimoda of Japan before a large crowd of jubilant Filipinos at the Cotai Arena of the plush Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino in Macao last February. With the win over Shimoda, Sonsona who became the second youngest Filipino world champion at the age of 19 when he scored a rousing victory over veteran Jose Carita Lopez to win the WBO super flyweight title in Canada, resurrected his career which fell prey to a carefree lifestyle and moved back into contention with a record of 18-1-1 with 15 knockouts.
