FORMER PACQUIAO SPARRING PARTNER PORTER KO?S MALIGNAGGI By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 20 Apr 2014 The former sparring partner of ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao, IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter has scored a brutal 4th round knockout of the cocky Paulie Malignaggi who was looking to win a third world title at the DC Armory in Washington, District of Columbia. The undefeated Porter was making his first defense of the title he won from Devon Alexander in December 2013 who improved to 24-0-1 with 15 knockouts hammered the former champion Malignaggi who fell to 33-7 with 7 knockouts. Malignaggi who at one time insinuated that Pacquiao was on performance enhancing drugs was staggered in the second round by a left hook from Porter who continued to batter the so-called ?Magic Man? as he was cornered against the ropes before the solidly built Porter dropped Malignaggi in round four and then blasted him to the canvas with a flurry of punches. Time was 1:14 of the fourth round. Managed by Al Haymon and trained by his father Kenny Porter, Shawn was Pacquiao?s sparring partner when Pacquiao was preparing for his battle with Miguel Cotto over whom he scored a 12th round TKO in November 2009. We recall that Porter engaged Pacquiao in some torrid sparring sessions and helped prepare Manny really well for his clash with Cotto. Described as a fighter blessed with speed, power and boxing ability Porter has often been compared with Andre Berto, the former WBC welterweight champion. In a pre-fight interview Malignaggi said "A chance to win a third world championship, to take a belt from a guy like that ? it becomes a game not only of skill but of will. I will be a three-time world champion." Malignaggi said "I feel I'm the more talented fighter. I feel I'm the more intelligent fighter. I feel I've got more in my back pocket." Malignaggi held the IBF light-welterweight belt in 2007 and 2008, twice beating South Africa-born Lovemore Ndou for the title. He also held the WBA welterweight title for a year before losing it to Adrien Broner last year. The "Magic Man" was coming off a unanimous points victory over Zab Judah in December. For his part Porter had said "We're going to defend it with everything we have. We're going to defend it with honor, with will and with skill. We have worked hard for this. We understand the position we are in and we're excited." The one fight Porter did not win was when he was held to a draw over ten rounds with Julio Diaz in 2010. He won their rematch on points last September, setting up his title bout with Alexander. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
