WBA SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION QUIGG RETAINS TITLE BY 2ND ROUND TKO

PhilBoxing.com

Britain?s WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg who went toe-to-toe with the Philippines Genesis ?Azukal? Servania at the Wild Card Gym of trainer Freddie Roach last January in a furious sparring session, has retained his title with a 2nd round TKO over South Africa?s Tsahifhiwa Munyai in Manchester, England.

Quigg dropped the South African challenger in the opening round and finished him off in the second.

Munyai had taken the fight on short notice after Venezuela?s Nehomar Cermeno was forced to pull out of the fight because of visa problems, suffered one of the worst beatings of his career.

Quigg decked Munyai with a left hook in the final 20 seconds of the opening round with the South African beating the mandatory count and hanging in to the bell.

The world champion nailed Munyai with a big overhead right who went down against the ropes and got up only to be hammered by two more shots to the head forcing referee Howard Foster to call a halt.

With the win Quigg improves to 28-0-2 with 21 knockouts while Munyai drops to 24-3-1.

In a post fight interview with Sky Sports, the 25 year old Quigg said ?he took the fight at late notice but I demolished him. I wanted to make a statement and I said you were going to see the best of Scott Quigg. No one has ever done that to Munyai.?

The undefeated WBO Intercontinental 122 pound champion Servania engaged Quigg in what was described as a ?well applauded four round sparring session.?

The 22 year old Servania who has a record of 23-0 with 9 knockouts refused to be awed by the hard-hitting world champion.

Quigg who won the world title with a 2nd round TKO of Argentine Dioego Oscar Silva whom he dropped twice in round two and earned a stoppage victory at 1:41 of the round.

Trainer Edito ?Ala? Villamor told the Manila Standard after the sparring session that the fast-rising Servania and World Champion Quigg "entertained the onlookers with their torrid exchange of blows with no let-up."
