DONAIRE SR CONFIDENT ALVAREZ CAN WIN WBC CONTINENTAL AMERICAS TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 01 Apr 2014 Alvarez. Trainer Nonito "Dodong" Donaire Sr is confident about the chances of undefeated Filipino flyweight Joebert Alvarez when he battles Mexican flyweight champion Julian "Chicano" Rivera for the WBC Continental Americas flyweight title in Mexico City on Saturday, Manila Time. Donaire Sr told the Manila Standard that he and Alvarez would leave for Mexico on Wednesday and that Joebert tipped the scales at the 112 pound limit in an unofficial weigh-in yesterday. He said the 24 year old fighter with a record of 13-0-1 with 6 knockouts spent the day relaxing because "I don't want to burn him out." He noted that Rivera (13-8-1, 2 KO's) who won the Mexican flyweight title with a twelve round split decision over Ulises Lara last November 23 "is flat-footed so I instructed Joebert to move in and out and to use his speed to advantage." The trainer who will arrive in Manila on April 12 to handle the training camp of his son, Nonito "The Filipinoi Flash" Donaire who clashes with WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa in Macau on May 31, said Alvarez has been "working really hard and he is ready for this fight. It?s very important for me to finish what Joebert and I have started as this has been a very tough training camp." Donaire Sr who trained world ranked bantamweight Marvin Mabait when he scored a first round knockout over Johnny Garcia, as Donaire Sr had predicted in a WBO International title fight last October 11, but left Donaire after the fight and hooked up with another trainer, lost by a 5th round TKO in his next fight against two-time world title challenger Alejandro Hernandez last weekend in Mexico. Asked what fight fans could expect from Alvarez who is nicknamed "Little Pacman" and is from General Santos City, the hometown of "Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao, Donaire Sr said Joebert "is in excellent condition. I have the game plan together. I fully expect for him to be successful come Friday night." Alvarez himself said "I will be faster and stronger from what I have seen of him on video. However, I cannot be overconfident at all and must stay focused as if we are of equal speed and power" against Rivera who has world championship experience having lost a unanimous twelve round decision in a battle for the WBA Interim title against Juan Carlos Reveco on November 10, 2012. He added "we have a game plan and my mind is on carrying it out. I respect my opponent but I cannot let other factors distract me."
