NBA -- Pierce, Nets hold off the Heat in Miami By Reynante Bulawan PhilBoxing.com Thu, 13 Mar 2014 MIAMI -- It was a night when monikers such as King James, Rio, The Truth, S-Dot and D-will were visible in the back of the players' jerseys but it didn't take long for fans to be reminded that basketball is not an individual sport. The winner of Wednesday night's battle was the team that played for the name in front of the jersey. The Brooklyn Nets held on to 96-95 victory over the Miami Heat. thanks to Paul Pierce, who scored 17 of his game high 29 pts in the third quarter. "The Truth" led the way scoring buckets when the Nets needed it the most. "These are the big games, these games that as a competitor you enjoy to play in, a playoff type of atmosphere against the world champs, against a team who's growing trying to find itself going into the playoffs."Pierce told Lisa Salters of ESPN after the game. "This is the a great game to be a part of I'm glad we got away with the win," Pierce added. The Nets got a huge boost from Mirza Teletovich off the bench as the second year forward scored 17 points, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Alongside Pierce the duo seemingly answered every Miami comeback throughout the game. Dwyane Wade continued his string of good games scoring 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Chris Bosh added 24 pts and 9 rebounds for Miami. Despite shooting 48.5% from the field the Heat struggled to keep up with the Nets ball movement. The game was tied at 42-42 at the half. The referees nullified a Shaun Livingston basket earlier in the second quarter Mental mistakes proved costly for the Heat. Dwayne Wade inexplicably wasted close to three seconds after grabbing a crucial rebound after a Deron Williams miss before calling a timeout. Then Chris Bosh had an intended pass to James intercepted by a pesky Brookyn defense who forced 17 turnovers with the last one eventually spelling the difference for Miami. Brooklyn (33-30) has won 7 of their last 8 games. Veteran Kevin Garnett missed his seventh straight game because of back spasms. With the loss the Heat (44-18) have now dropped their 4 of their last 5 games (RB) Photo: Paul Pierce had a turn-back-the-clock moment against the Heat at the American Airlines Arena, scoring 29 points.
