BRUNO ESCALANTE RETAINS IBA SUPER FLYWEIGHT TITLE WITH DEVASTATING 1ST ROUND KO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 Mar 2014 IBA super flyweight champion Bruno Escalante who was born in Cebu but fights out of San Carlos, California has retained his title with a devastating 1st round knockout of Mexican veteran Lorenzo ?Explosivo? Trejo at the Fox Theater in Redwood City, California. Escalante who won the title with a majority decision over American southpaw Michael Ruiz Jr in a fight card at the Sports House in Redwood City, California last December 7, used his speed and quickness while throwing punches off peculiar angels before the violent knockout happened. It was a left hook to the body followed by a right hook to the head that sent the Mexican down for the count according to a report from Mario Serrano. In a post fight interview, Escalante who at one time sparred with good friend Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, said "I wanted to come out tonight and put on a great show for my fans," adding that ?all the hard work paid off and I got my opponent out of there in the first round. The knockout was set up with good footwork and it felt great. I want to thank my team for getting me ready for this fight. I couldn't do it without them." With the win by the 25 year old Escalante who is champion of what is regarded as a fringe organization outside such established bodies as the WBC, WBO, IBF and WBA improved his record to 12-1-1 with 6 knockouts while the 36 year old veteran Trejo dropped to 33-28-1 with 20 knockouts. The only setback suffered by Escalante was when he dropped a unanimous eight round decision to undefeated Matthew Villanueva who had a record of 7-0-1 with 7 knockouts. Trejo lost by a 4th round knockout to eventual world champion Rodel Mayol in a WBC title eliminator on January 28, 2006 and fought a roster of greats losing to Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel, Jorge ?Travieso? Arce, Eric Morel and Ivan Calderon. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
