PBO TO TELECAST MARVIN SONSONA SPECIAL PART I ON SATURDAY AT 8:30 P.M. By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 06 Feb 2014 Sonsona. The popular Pinoy Box Office channel of Viva Entertainment will telecast a two-part special on former world super flyweight champion Marin Sonsona on ?The Main Event? on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. with a replay on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The two-part special is a lead-up to Sonsona?s return to the ring against former WBA super bantamweight champion Akifumi Shimoda of Japan in a Top Rank card at the Cotai Arena in the plush Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino in Macau. It comes following a major breakthrough in a partnership between PBO and the pre-eminent cable network in the country SkyCable which was officially launched last Thursday and branded "The Perfect Match." Sonsona?s battle against the tough Shimoda is primed to re-start his promising ring career after a series of ups and downs. A 23 year old southpaw, Sonsona who has a record of 17-1-1 with 14 knockouts, was the second youngest Filipino boxer to win a world title at the age of 19 when he captured the WBO super flyweight title from veteran Jose Carita Lopez of Puerto Rico in Ontario, Canada on September 4, 2009. The talented fighter from General Santos City says he?s determined to fight his way back into the world rankings as a featherweight and hopefully earn a world title shot if he beats Shimoda. Sonsona showed his skills and punching power early in his career when his fights were telecast on ?The Main Event.? Part I of the special will feature a flashback to some of his early fights including his 5th round TKO over Jerome Bontog at the Cebu Coliseum, his clash with Joel Rafols for the WBO Asia Pacific Youth title in Naga City in Cebu which he won by a 2nd round TKO and his 1st round TKO over Jason Geda in Compostela, Cebu. One of Marvin Sonsona?s most impressive wins was against Thailand?s Wandee Singwancha for the vacant WBO Oriental flyweight title at the Cebu Coliseum which set him up for a crack at the WBO super flyweight title held by Puerto Rico?s Jose Carita Lopez. The Wandee fight will also be shown in the special. Sonsona trained hard for the Carita Lopez world title fight under the watchful eye of Jun Agrabio who studied tapes and worked on a fight plan with Sonsona telling us he was confident of winning the world title, which he did. ?The Main Event? Part I ends with highlights of the early rounds of the Carita Lopez title fight courtesy of Solar Sports. Next week we will feature an interview with trainer Jun Agrabio and Sonsona?s sparring with Cristian Abila and Archie Toquero as well as highlights of Akifumi Shimoda?s battle with touted Mexican Rico Ramos.
