MIKEY GARCIA DOMINATES BURGOS TO WIN BY UNANIMOUS DECISION

PhilBoxing.com

WBO junior lightweight champion Mikey Garcia dominated Mexico?s Juan Carlos Burgos at the famed Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York but failed to satisfy the sell-out crowd of over 5,000 who had earlier enjoyed an action-packed undercard.

Judges Julie Lederman amd Michael Pernick scored the fight 118-110 for Garcia while the third judge John Poturai had Garcia the winner by a near shutout scoring it 119-109.

It was Garcia?s first successful defense of the title he won with an 8th round knockout of Puerto Rico?s Roman ?Rocky? Martinez last November 9 in Corpus Christi Texas.

In a fight card telecast by ABS-CBN Sports & Action on the revamped Studio 23 Garcia started a little more aggressively than he normally does and caught Burgos with a solid left hook but the Mexican nailed Garcia with a good right hand in round two that buckled Garcia?s knees and nearly dropped him just as the champion was moving in and trying to force the action.
Mikey?s trainer, elder brother and former world champion admonished the champion in-between rounds not to be overconfident and it seemed to work as Garcia appeared more focused and serious, especially with former Cuban Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa and his possible next opponent at ringside.

In a post fight interview Garcia who improved to 34-0 with 28 knockouts said "It doesn't matter to me who's next. If (Gamboa) or any other top challenger wants to sit down and put (a fight) on the table, that's what we will do. They know what they got to do, we know what we have to do."

Garcia conceded that the height of Burgos who dropped to 30-2-2 with 20 knockouts gave him problems but he added ?I found my range and I found my distance and that was it."

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had earlier touted Garcia as a possible opponent for ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao down the road but clearly Garcia showed he has a long way to go to 147 pounds and a fight with the eight division world champion who is scheduled to face Timothy ?Desert Storm? Bradley in an eagerly awaited rematch on April 12 in Las Vegas.
