FIBA HELPS TYPHOON ?YOLANDA? VICTIMS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 06 Jan 2014 FIBA SecGen Patrick Baumann. The international governing body for basketball, Fiba, has made a donation to help in the relief efforts for the victims of typhoon Yolanda (known as typhoon Haiyan internationally). The FIBA Central Board last December donated 10,000 Swiss francs or equivalent to around half-a-million pesos to the relief effort. In the letter to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President, businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan, FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann expressed the international basketball federation?s ?support, solidarity and sincere sympathy? to the Philippines for the devastation wrought by the super typhoon. Baumann disclosed that in the FIBA Central Board meeting held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, FIBA President Yvan Mainini dedicated a part of his speech to highlight the unfortunate situation in the Philippines while mentioning his fond memories from his visit to Manila when he attended the FIBA Asia Championship last August. In eleven memorable days in August the Gilas Pilipinas national team earned a berth in the World Cup in Spain from August 30 to September 14 this year by finishing runners-up to Iran after beating South Korea in a classic semi final game. The donation of 10,000 Swiss francs was made to Swiss Chaine de Bonheur (Swiss Solidarity), an organization based in Switzerland where FIBA is also based. Aside from the donation, a special banner was displayed on the FIBA.com homepage to encourage people to donate for the benefit of typhoon victims in the Philippines. FIBA meanwhile said it hopes that Gilas Pilipinas would be able to train for the 2014 FIBA World Cup this September despite the hard times that the basketball-loving country is facing.
