MIKEY GARCIA SCHOOLS MARTINEZ, KNOCKS HIM OUT IN 8TH ROUND By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 10 Nov 2013 Undefeated Mikey Garcia who relinquished his featherweight title to move up to super featherweight, suffered a flash knockdown in round two but came back to school WBO champion Roman ?Rocky? Martinez before scoring a spectacular knockout in the 8th round at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Martinez, the last remaining Puerto Rican world champion who was accompanied into the ring by former world champion Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez who was previously knocked out by Garcia, accompanied Martinez into his corner but it proved to be no help. After a feeling-out opening round, the aggressive Martinez caught Garcia with a perfect right hand counter in round two which surprised more than stunned Garcia. The undefeated younger brother of 2012 ?Trainer of the Year? Robert Garcia kept his focus and methodically ripped Martinez apart as the fight wore on and it seemed only a matter of time before he would take Martinez out. Garcia, boxing beautifully, shook Martinez with several combinations in the sixth round, continued to dominate the seventh before ripping into the champion with a devastating left hook to the body in the eighth with referee Laurence Cole counting out the hapless Puerto Rican at :56 seconds of the round. Demetrius Andrade won the vacant WBO junior middleweight title with a split decision over Vanes Martirosyan who, like Darchinyan, was an Armenian. Two of the judges scored it for the American who outworked Martirosyan who trains at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach 117-110 and 114-113 while the third judge had Martirosyan who dropped Andrade in round two with a left hook, ahead 115-112. Undefeated WBA featherweight champion Nicholas ?Axe Man? Walters of Jamaica retained his title with a devastating 4th round knockout over Mexico?s Alberto Garza. In his US debut after being signed up by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, Walters was the aggressor from the opening bell and nailed Garza with a cracking right to end the contest at 1:57 of the fourth round. An ecstatic Arum congratulated Walters in the ring and said ?very good. I?ll put you in with some of the big names? to which Walters replied ?that?s what I want.? One of those that Arum had proposed before today was Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire but after Donaire?s showing against Darchinyan he may have a change of heart.
