STUDIO 23 TO TELECAST ALVARADO-PROVODNIKOV WAR By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 17 Oct 2013 The giant broadcast network ABS-CBN's Studio 23 will telecast the eagerly anticipated "war" between WBO light welterweight champion Mike "Mile High" Alvarado and rugged Russian Ruslan Provodnikov in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, Manila Time at 11:30 a.m. Alvarado won the title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios in a rematch last March 30 after Rios won their first fight by a 7th round TKO which many fans thought was premature on October 13, 2012. The 33 year old Alvarado has a record of 34-1 with 23 knockouts while Provodnikov is 29 and has a record of 22-2 with 15 knockouts. Provodnikov, a former sparring partner of "Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao engaged undefeated welterweight champion Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley in a hellacious fight that up to now ranks as a top contender for "Fight of the Year" honors. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes this is a fight you don't need to hype considering the styles and the qualities of both fighters. He said "These guys are warriors. They are going to come to fight. Yes, there will be some good boxing. What we are going to see is really a knock-down fight." Arum said he is expecting a sellout at the 6,500-seat 1STBANK Center located in the Denver suburb of Broomfield. An added interest for Filipino boxing fans is the fact that celebrated Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach won't be in Provodnikov's corner as he is busy training Pacquiao for his crucial November 24 bout for the WBO International light welterweight title fight against Rios. In his place will be Roach's Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio who works with all the top fighters in the Wild Card Gym. Arum pointed out "Freddie met Somodio in the Philippines. He is a kid that has worked in the camp with Manny and Freddie and he has come to America and is working out of Freddie?s gym. He speaks perfect English and can understand everything that his being said. Even though Ruslan uses an interpreter on the call he is fluent in English." Both fighters said in an international conference call that the fight would come down to a test of will. Provodnikov said "whoever has the strongest will is going to win this fight. Whoever has the most willpower, whoever is stronger mentally is going to win this fight." For his part Alvarado responded "I?ve been in these kinds of fights before and I know how they can end up. I am very strong mentally and very strong-willed. I?ve been there before and need to use my will to make the fight go my way. I?m ready to put on a great show and ready to win this fight."
