NBA -- Kings look forward to new chapter By Wilson Alday PhilBoxing.com Mon, 23 Sep 2013 ![]() SACRAMENTO -- With all the offseason changes, Sacramento Kings fans have plenty to be optimistic about the upcoming 2013-14 season. The city of Sacramento and city officials led by mayor Kevin Johnson fought a hard battle to keep the Kings home in the California?s capital. In their 14-year tenure as team owners, the Maloof family successfully played a huge part producing many memorable winning seasons. But like all good book's everything comes to an end. The transition began when the Maloof family transferred ownership to a Sacramento investor group led by Vivek Ranadive. Shortly thereafter, the franchise named a new head coach --- Michael Malone, a former Golden State Warriors lead assistant. ?Michael Malone is one of the best and most talented coaches in the game,? said team owner Vivek Ranadive. Having a working relationship with the Warriors, Ranadive, vice chairman of the Warrior knows first hand how significant Malone will be to this revamped team. After a general manager search, the Kings chose Pete D? Alessandro, who was the Denver Nuggets? vice president of basketball operations and contributed in player development and day-to-day basketball activities. Behind an enthusiastic ownership, strong management team and coach Malone, the Kings are poised to make a serious playoff run and potentially a championship sooner than later. Rising star DeMarcus Cousins and sharp shooter Marcus Thompson are the focal pieces of the franchise but the team also made vast improvements in all positions. The Kings selected Kansas product guard Ben McLemore in the first round and guard Ray McCallum in the second round to provide young talent and added backcourt depth. To help solidify the team, the Kings traded guard Tyreke Evans for pass-first guard Greivis Vasquez from New Orleans, acquired a premier NBA defender forward Luc Mbah a Moute from the Milwaukee Bucks via trade and made a key free agent pick up of versatile, high energy player in forward Carl Landry. The revamped Kings will start training camp on October 1. It will be interesting to see how the mix of young and veteran players can co-exist. It?s a fresh start for the Kings organization and a new chapter of the Kings era. (WA) Photo: DeMarcus Cosuins (L) is expected to lead the Kings into the future.
