FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION MARES PREDICTS A WAR AGAINST EX-CHAMP GONZALEZ By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 22 Aug 2013 Gonzalez. A champion who Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire has in his sights and a champion who lost his title in a stunning knockout at the hands of former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa clash in a battle for the WBC featherweight title on Sunday, Manila Time. In a cracking championship double-header by Golden Boy Promotions, undefeated three-division world champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KO?s) will defend his WBC featherweight title against former two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KO?s) while unbeaten former IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KO?s) will challenge WBC super bantamweight champion Victor ?Vikingo? Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KO?s) in a Showtime presentation to be telecast by TV 5 in the Philippines. Mares has predicted all out ring warfare when he faces compatriot Gonzalez in the first defense of his WBC title. The WBC quoted Mares who said ?Two Mexicans inside a ring means it will be a great fight. We?ll fight our hearts out, and it will be a war!? After a public workout at the Fabela Ch?vez Boxing Center, in Carson, California, Mares said ?My preparation was excellent, I?m in great shape and I'm at my peak. I know Jhonny is an awesome fighter but I?m more than ready to face him!? Former world champion Gonz?lez who lost his WBO bantamweight crown in a stunning 7th round knockout to Penalosa in August 2007 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento is adding the finishing touches to what the WBC described as ?a cream of a crop training camp, in the countdown to his showdown with Mares this at the StubHub Center in Carson City.? Jhonny trained at the ?Fabela Ch?vez Boxing Center? there, displaying his great power and excellent physical condition. Gonzalez who doesn't mind his underdog status one little bit, appreciates that this is a wonderful chance for him to become world champion once again, and in so doing, to prove certain critics wrong. He said ?I feel in great shape, ready for this great challenge. I?ve been working a lot for this fight, my goal is to regain the title. And that?s the only thing on my mind right now.?
