SUPER SPORT BLASTS IRRESPONSIBLE MATCH-MAKING

PhilBoxing.com

Super Sport in South Africa has blasted continuing mismatches in boxing, accusing promoters, boxing administrators and trainers in several countries of irresponsible match-making. It said ?the trend of sending no-hopers into fights against accomplished fighters continued at the weekend.?

Among those cited was what Super Sport branded ?one of the worst examples of disgraceful match-ups that could seriously harm the health of boxers when Ulises Lara was knocked down five times before he lost to WBA flyweight champion Juan Carlos Reveco.?

It said the fight in Mendoza, Argentina, was ?a complete mismatch. It ended in the eighth round, leaving the WBA officials to explain how and why they had sent their 15th-ranked contender into a fight against the champion. And how Lara was ever rated at No 15.?

Reveco, from Argentina, knocked the Mexican down twice in the sixth round and three times in the eighth round before the fight was stopped.

The champion improved his record to 31-1, with 17 wins inside the distance. Lara, whose career is going nowhere, dropped to 12-14, with two draws and seven knockouts.

Over in Nottingham, England, featherweight Leigh Wood (8-0; 2 KO?s) knocked out Ian Bailey in the second round. Bailey?s record now stands at 8 wins and 13 defeats.

The promoters did even worse when they sent Ryan McNicol into a fight against former British and Commonwealth super-bantamweight champion Jason Booth.

McNicol, who lost on points over six rounds, now has a professional record of 4 victories, 25 defeats and 3 draws. He has never beaten anyone inside the distance, yet his handlers and the authorities allowed him to fight an opponent who now has a record of 36-11, with 15 knockouts.

Super Sport also pointed to the 3rd round knockout of former WBO flyweight and super-flyweight and WBO and WBC bantamweight champion Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel who outclassed Filipino Jaderes Padua and knocked him out 1 minute 12 seconds into the third round. Padua dropped to 8-3-1; 5.

Fernando Montiel improved his record to 50-4-2 as he won inside the distance for the 37th time in his career.

Another Filipino Weng Haya was knocked out at 2:57 of the 2nd round by promising undefeated Mexican super featherweight Miguel Berchelt, the 21 year old with a record of 19-0 with 16 knockouts while Haya dropped to 17-6 with 9 knockouts.

Haya had suffered a 4th round TKO in a WBO Asia Pacific interim tiotle fight against countryman Jose Ocampo after being dropped twice in round three and once in round four last March 4.
Haya who gave then world champion Orlando Salido a tough time before losing by an 8th round TKO after dropping the world champion in rounds 3 and 4 before he himself was sent to the canvas in round 8, was coming off a 1st round knockout of Cris Alag, a 33 year old veteran with a pathetic record of 7 wins, 21 losses and only 3 knockouts.

The fights were among a string of mismatches inexplicably approved by the Philippine Games and Amusements Board.
