Knicks manhandle Pacers, tie series at 1-1
By Reynaldo Seno PhilBoxing.com Thu, 09 May 2013
NEW YORK -- Down 64-62 deficit with 3:28 left in the third quarter, the New York Knicks were in real danger of losing to the Indiana Pacers for the second time in three nights. And the very thought of falling into an 0-2 hole in the Eastern Conference semifinal clouded the Madison Square Garden with nervous excitement.
But when the Pacers failed to score a field goal in the next 12 minutes and 19 seconds, the Knicks went on an unbelievable 36-4 blitz that turned a slim two-point deficit into a 98-68 bubble with 3:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. By then, most of the 19,033 Garden faithful were up on their feet, filled with joyous rage as the Knicks went on to score a 105-79 finale.
Suddenly, this best-of-7 series is tied at 1-1 as it heads off the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for Game 3 on Saturday.
Carmelo Anthony broke out of a Game 1 slump and hit 13 of 26 field goals to lead the Knicks with 32 points in Game 2. Iman Shumpert added 15 while Raymond Felton added 14. Defensive guard Pablo Prigioni went perfect from the field, 4-for-4, for 10 points. J.R. Smith continued to struggle and missed 12 of 15 shots for eight points but the Knicks nailed 10 of 33 threes and shot 48.9 percent from the field overall.
"I think he's great. He's just a beast of an offensive player and a competitor on the defensive end. He (Carmelo Anthony) made a lot of tough shots. We guarded him pretty well but he was great tonight," Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel told reporters in his post-game press conference.
All-Star Paul George sank eight of 16 shots for 20 points while David West and George Hill chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. But no other Pacer notched double figures in points and Indiana, which shot 45.5 percent from the field, couldn't reprise the seamless offense and sting defense that netted them a 102-95 Game 1 victory.
