'BOOM BOOM' OUT TO EXORCISE GHOST OF PONCE DE LEON KNOCKOUT LOSS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 20 Apr 2013 WBO Intercontinental featherweight champion Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista is determined to exorcise the ghost of his crushing 1st round knockout loss to then super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in the "World Cup of Boxing" against Mexico at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California in August 2007. Bautista (34-2, 25 KO's) was reminded of the first of two blemishes in his career when his opponent in the title defense in "Pinoy Pride XIX", rugged Mexican slugger Jose Ramirez (24-0, 15 KO's) told Bautista he had spoken to Ponce De Leon about his showdown with "Boom Boom" and was told by Ponce De Leon to go for his chin. Bautista who has trained hard and continues to nurture hopes of facing Ponce De Leon and avenging that defeat sometime in the future is hell-bent on scoring a rousing win and hopefully setting the stage for a De Leon rematch. Both Bautista and the heavily-tattooed Ramirez predicted it would be an action-packed bout with the two fighters aiming for a knockout but ready to go twelve rounds if they have to. Bautista avenged his only other loss which was an eight round unanimous decision to Heriberto Ruiz redeemed his image by winning the rematch against Ruiz handily. While the Bautista-Ramirez main event is certain to be exciting, the battle for the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation super flyweight championship between King Arthur Villanueva and Marco Demecillo Singwancha is expected to steal the show. Both fighters are undefeated and are crowd pleasers with Villanueva (20-0, 11 KO's) defending his title against Demecillo (18-0-1, 14 KO's) who has vowed to come charging at the champion from the opening bell. The support for the fight card of ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN has been overwhelming and a sellout crowd is expected at the University of Southeastern Philippines Gymnasium on Saturday. The fights will be telecast on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. over Channel 2 with a replay in the afternoon over Studio 23. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
