RIOS-ALVARADO SHOULD BE ANOTHER WAR By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 28 Mar 2013 Another war is expected when Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado meet in Las Vegas this weekend in a fight to be telecast on ABS-CBN Studio 23 at 12:00 noon on Sunday. Most fight fans believe that if the fight for the WBO interim light-welterweight title comes close to the battle Rios and Alvarado fought in October last year at the Home Depot in Carson City, California, it should be another toe-to-toe slugfest at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. In their first clash Rios and Alvarado stood toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring, throwing punches non-stop. The scores were about even when Rios caught Alvarado with a right hook in the sixth round. Alvarado finished the round but was hurt again in the seventh. Rios had his opponent on the ropes when the referee stopped the fight which in the opinion of several fight fans at ringside was premature. The 26-year-old Rios, from Oxnard in California is trained by Robert Garcia and turned pro in 2004. He has a record of 31-0-1, with 23 knockouts. He won the WBA lightweight title in February 2011 when he stopped Miguel Acosta in the tenth round and retained the belt when he knocked out Urbano Antillon in the third round five months later. In December 2011 he came in overweight against John Murray, whom he stopped in the 11th round, but the title was declared vacant. Rios also failed to make the weight for his next fight. He fought Richard Abril but was deemed lucky to win the fight for the vacant title which remained vacant. He moved up to light-welterweight for his fight against Alvarado for the vacant WBO Latino title. The 32 year old has a record of 33-1 with 23 knockouts. He beat good fighters such as Ray Narth (25-1), Gabriel Martinez (27-2-1), Breidis Prescott (24-3) and Mauricio Herrera (18-1) before suffering his first loss against Rios. Rios is ranked No 1 by the WBO and Alvarado No 2. The referee will be Tony Weeks and the judges Dave Moretti, Duane Ford and William Lerch.
