PhilBoxing.com

MANILA (PNA) - Believing in the maxim that early preparation is the key to success, the Philippine Taekwondo Association and the Philippine Amateur Judo Association have both set in place their respective programs aimed at improving their performances in the coming 27th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December in Myanmar. The PTA, for its part, is looking forward to as far as the Olympic Games three years from now in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil where it hopes to hand the country the much coveted first gold medal in the quadrennial conclave since it first compete in 1924.

?First things first,? Noel Veneracion, a member of the national coaching staff said in yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura. ?This year, it will be the SEA Games then the Asian Games next.?

National judo coach Rolan Llamas, who also appeared as SCOOP guest, agreed with Veneracion, saying PAJA on the other hand, has also formed a six-man nucleus for the Philippine team aimed to surpass its counterparts? performance the 2011 SEA Games.

Taekwondo emerged as the winningest delegation two years ago in Indonesia with a total 12-medal production made up of 4 gold medals 3 silver and 5 bronze medals, while judo had a 1-0-6 tally. ?Tomorrow until Sunday, we will be having the annual Carlos Palanca Jr. championships where candidates for membership in the national team will be chosen,? Veneracion disclosed during the forum, sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA.

According to Veneracion, who came to the session accompanied by 2011 SEA Games gold medalists Japoy Lizardo and Elaine Alora, winners of the gold medals, silver and bronze medals in each division will automatically advance to the next phase of selection where they will be paired with members of the Indonesia Games to determine the official composition of the national squad.

Veneracion, who along with head coach Roberto ?Kitoy? Cruz, is in charge of 2016 Brazil Olympic training program, said some 1,000 jins representing teams coming all the way from as far as Mindanao in the South and Aparri in the North, are participating in the two-day qualifying tournament set at the Ninoy Aqino Stadium.

?After the face-off phase of selection, araw-araw na and ensayo as we prepare for two important competitions that will serve as exposure for the team,? Veneracion said, in reference to the Asian University Games, the place and time of which are still to be decided, and the World Championships in July in Pueblo in Mexico.

Besides pinweight Lizardo middleweight Alora, heavyweight Camille Manalo and the women?s poomsae team of Rany Ortega, Janice Lagman and Camille Alarilla rounded out the Filipino jins? 4-gold show two years ago.

Meanwhile, the nucleus of the PH judo team that was approved by the PAJA board, headed by its president, Dave Carter, are Nancy Quillotes, the lone Filipino gold medalist in Indonesia while competing in the 45-kilogram category, bronze medalists Kyomi Watanabe (63-kg.),a Fil-Japanese, Dennis Catipon (66-kg.), Jellou Mosqueda (57-kg.), Gilbert Ramirez (70-kg) and Helen Dawa (48-kg.).

?All of these judokas, except for Quillotes, are bronze medal winners in 2011,? Llamas said. ?Breaks lang ang ikinatalo ng mga yan for the gold medals, but if the plans to send them overseas for exposure, wala akong duda na yung bronze nila magiging gold.?
