Ukraine dispatch of USA in style (4-1)

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, Switzerland, 14 December 2012 - It was a spectacular show at the 'Terminal' as an inspired Ukraine Otamans recorded their first victory of the season with a classy defeat of USA Knockouts in this Group B encounter. Gogolyev, Matviychuk, Golub and Vykhrest were the stars on the night with two TKO wins between the four.

The 23-year-old Ukraine orthodox fighter Gogolyev began well in the first contest of the evening against uncompromising Mexican Bantamweight (50-54kg) Braulio Avila Juarez, using his jab well to take the first. Avila Juarez, in his third season in WSB, used his knowledge to draw his rival in to box at close quarters to claim the second. Gogolyev showed his mettle and from then on used his range to good effect and his good tactical plan worked as he took the victory after dominating the latter stages.

Matviychuk of Ukraine then also made his competitive bow on the night with the Otamans Lightweight (57-61kg) orthodox battling 2008 Olympic silver medallist Daouda Sow. The French southpaw, with a 12-0 record in the pro ranks, could not get to grips with the aggressive Ukrainian who was roughing him up throughout the five rounds. Matviychuk was unrelenting, never giving any time for his opponent to settle into any rhythm as he claimed a huge scalp on his WSB debut.

It was the battle of the southpaws in the Middleweight (67-73kg) bout with Golub versus American 23-year-old Jeffrey Camp. The home boxer went all-out in round one, throwing an unbelievable amount of shots with his hooks connecting well. Golub's imposing frame had Camp on the back foot in rounds one and two. The Ukrainian continued to pick apart his rival with hits to both the head and the body of his rival. The pressure told with the punishment being dished out again in the third with Camp taking a standing eight count after being on the receiving end of a huge left hook. The American was in damage limitation mode but resistance was futile as Golub took victory in the fifth by TKO. No one will want to face the Ukrainian after that performance.

The Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) showdown between Denys Solonenko and the Knockouts' 27-year-old Bosnian Dzemal Bosnjak was a real close fight between two boxers eager to impress. Bosnjak was throwing a lot of big uppercuts in this one and his uncompromising style had his rival in trouble in the final two rounds as he claimed a hard-fought victory to reduce the deficit for the USA Knockouts.

The final contest of the night had tall Viktor Vykhrest of Ukraine locking horns with 21-year-old Irish Sean Turner at Heavyweight (91+kg). The height and reach of the home boxer gave him the edge in round one but the tough Irishman was boxing well, pushing his rival towards the ropes peppering him with some good hits to take the second. The two slugged it out in rounds three and four and the Ukrainian had just enough about him to claim those rounds. Vykhrest kept up the pressure and his power was too much as he took the victory in round five by TKO.

Ukraine host British Lionhearts at the 'Terminal' next whilst USA are in Italy to face the Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder at the Mediolanum Forum on Saturday 12 December.
