INDONESIA EDGE PHILIPPINES 3-2 IN DAVIS CUP TIE

PhilBoxing.com

In a case of what might have been, the Philippines lost 2-3 in its Asia-Oceania Zone Group II Davis Cup tie after Treat Huey, who won his opening day singles but was injured in the crucial doubles match playing alongside Ruben Gonzales on Saturday while Jeson Patrombon who took Huey?s place against Indonesia?s No. 1 Christopher Rungkat, lost in the first reverse singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the tie.

Although Francis Casey ?Nino? Alcantara won the reverse singles 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 vs Sunu Wahyu Trijiati it was a no-bearing match and enabled Indonesia to advance to Group I with Filipino team captain Roland Kraut saying ?Indonesia deserved to win because even if the Philippines won the tie we wouldn?t be ready for Group I level by next year.?

Davis Cup administrator Randy Villanueva told the Manila Standard that ?the tie could have gone either way if we only got the breaks. Elbert Sie actually cramped after the doubles game? and felt that Alcantara would have clinched the tie if the Philippines had won the doubles.

Alcantara said that Huey who won his opening singles match but lost the doubles in partnership with Gonzales ?got hurt and couldn?t serve properly.?

Villanueva noted that ?our team is a young team that has great potential in the future. Indonesia was in the same situation two years ago and look at them now. We are the second best team this year and with the experience gained here in Jakarta we are determined to be the best in the group next year.?

Despite the loss team manager Jean Henri Lhuiller said ?we are very proud of our team, Everybody played a bearing game and have important roles. Everybody tried hard and gave their best.?

The Indonesians banked on Rungkat who got the better of the line calls in his opening singles match which frustrated Alcantara to win in four sets 7-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 before he partnered Elbert Sie to overcome Huey and Gonzales.

The 22 year old Rungkat compete regularly on the ITF circuit and is ranked No. 292 while none of the Filipinos are ranked anywhere near in singles although Huey is ranked No. 39 in doubles.

With the win Indonesia leads the Philippines 6-4 in head-to-head encounters.
